Range Report 6.5mm SLR/s exercised today

Wanted to post some more recent results for those that have asked.

Thanks to KevinU for volunteering a second chrono to help verify mine, and for a much needed fun day shooting!

Specs:
rifle chambered "6.5mm Super LR/s", 30" 1:8" barrel, 44 rds down the tube - clean bore for today.

Conditions:
approx 9400ish feet, 60*, bluebird skies- prob just over 30 in Hg? (39.609974,-105.992129)

*life has not left much time to do full 5rd+ workups yet on everything-was just glad to get out and learn more today.

*(used daisy chained CED chronos, first at 10' and at 12'-numbers below given in that order)

*all rounds today were new Win brass, sized, flash hole deburred, neck chamfered only, BR2 primers.



130gr Berger VLD, 2.900" coal,

^showing no pressure signs...will load easily another half grain to a full grain more for next round to find pressure max, last four shots dropped on top of each other. VERY pleased with that little data set.

no signs of pressure, accuracy plenty good, will be hard to pick a load until I can run these at 300yds to see what is going on.

accuracy very good, no pressure signs, just wanted to double check speeds as the 43.9g load is very accurate.
stopped at 45.0gr H4350 previously where I had a mild case head swipe and primer leakage


Now the fun part, choosing a load to move forward with in numbers!-140gr Berger hybrids on the way this week, 140gr JLK's on deck now. Very impressed so far, accuracy is where I had hoped it to be or better, speeds are almost there, accuracy seems very load tolerant...now I just need to pick a paint scheme and decide how fast I want to run!

i would stick with h4350 it seems to be so consistent with 6.5 calibers
i got great numbers with r17 but not consistent accuracy
have fun looks like you got a hammer

Keep working the RL17 along with the 4350, my experience opposite of bkster's out of TRG 260.

You stated before that you're jumping the 142SMK. How much jump are you using? Did you jump the 130's too? I believe the 130s COAL is too long for an un-altered AICS, what mags, if any, are you running?

Awesome velocities.

I too tried RL-17, didn't work for me. H4350 was the ticket in a Rem700 2/ Benchmark tube.

Ha, I just Googled 6.5slr and 130 VLDs in hopes of finally finding some data, this thread was at the top of the list. About time somebody shoots some 130s in this cartridge. Look forward to hearing how pushing them a little more goes for you.

LoweLeft-I am jumping (at least I think) all loads, using both plateless AI mag and Alpha mags, I'll post up some pics and the distance to the lands shortly. I wanted to run a few rounds through to make sure the throat settled down that last few thousandths before I load up a ton, and also partly it is really hard for me to feel the lands in this rifle when trying to measure-may have to load a bullet backwards to measure? If I remember right, the 2.900" 130's fit in the modified AI mag with some wiggle room.

Glad you found the thread-was thinkin' I should pm you with a link but didn't want to bug ya! Sorry for the minor data set on the 130's....more to come shortly. Really hoping to break 3200 sensibly.

so, $64,000 question(s), if a high bullet speed is achieved with relatively "normal" pressures(and/or slower pressure dwell times) and similar or lower charge heat, what rate of affect would it have on throat erosion?

Thanks for posting your results. It's always good to see real world numbers when considering cartridge options.

I'm probably just having a senior moment but I am having trouble reconciling your 2.9" COAL with the SLR/S reamer print. On the print, FB measures 0.055" and the lead measures 2.1103". Adding the 130 VLD ogive length of 0.724" to the lead equals 2.8343". In other words, a COAL of 2.9" would have the 130 well and truly jammed.

Is it possible you were supplied the LR chamber rather than the LR/S? (The LR has a FB of 0.160")

From what I've read on this topic recently, popular thinking is the slowest powder that still gets you your velocity is the way to go. Some are using H1000 in their smaller cartridges, specifically the 6.5x47 and 6 SLR. Again this is what I've read and haven't had the experience with it. Seems the slower burning powder is "cooler" on the throat...?

<span style="text-decoration: line-through">Well my 260 barrel is done after just over 1800 rounds.</span> So my new 6.5 Super LR is now my primary comp rifle. Back to the range tomorrow, doing load development with H4350 and 130 VLDs...

I'll post some results here.

Not so fast!! Turns out my Timney trigger had floating trigger pull weight. So I've got a new Timney. Also I sent off my McMillan A1-3 to have adjustable LOP installed. I bought the stock of this site and LOP was short. I'm hoping with the more consistent trigger and LOP fixed this rifle will still shoot sub-MOA. Waiting for the stock now...tick, tick, tick.

Got a load developed for the "Hamburgler"

Stiller TAC30AW, Rock Creek 25" RV 1-8 twist,6.5mm.
Rifle chambered and built by Phoenix Custom Rifles, bedded into a McMillan A5. 6.5 SLR using JGS Reamer with .055 throat.

Load data:
130 VLD - touching lands
42.4gr H-4350
Fed 210M primer
Rem 260 brass
COAL: 2.848

New and fired brass (DA 3900):
2915fps
ES: low 20s
SD: 7-8

last 5 shot groups (fired brass) .305", .400" and (new brass) .501"

I was hoping for more velocity, but accuracy wasn't there until about 43.8gr (good ES/SD). Problem was, I was getting good ejector swipes and sticky bolt lift.

First 5shot group at 300 yards shot right at MOA. At 500 was 3.5" Extreme spread was definitely horizontal due to some tricky wind.

Glad you found your sweet spot! So I am guessing you are going to get probably double the barrel life I will. I am headed out this afternoon to try some H100-V and some 130 VLD's. I hope that goes well.
How are your primer pockets holding up with the hot loads?

My remmy brass did HORRIBLE. A ton of loose primer pockets during load development. I'm going to move over to Win 7.08 brass next.

Resurrecting an old thread i know but my interest in the Super LR designed cartridges have my interest. Maybe yours too?

I like the idea of being able to score Win brass ANYTIME and for less $$ and not have to fireform.

Maybe I can't leave well enough alone, but am I the only one who thinks a 7 Super LR might be the cats ass? a little more power capacity to drive those 7mm bullets and a little better splash/energy down range? Not to mention it wouldn't hurt barrel life.

Has anyone heard of a 7 Super LR in real life?

Oh yeah, I shoot a 6.5 Creedmoor now so that might explain the attraction to easy to find and cheap brass, which is my main interest in this cartridge. Not looking for a performance advantage over what's already out there.
