Guys I am a lifelong shooter.....and I have fired countless rounds on several continents in numerous different scenarios. My right should fell apart about 3 years ago....several ops later there is no material left to operate on....no rotator cuff, no cartilege, they even cut off an inch of my clavicle to try to get a "proper fit"....all no goes. Basically they sanded down my pitted and spurred ball and socket joint to smooth the bone and thats it.

I have been like alot of us a 308 guy.....the standard. I do not plan on going overseas ever again. But I would like to get to where I could compete again and shoot well enough to demo or my students.........plus just hunting and punching paper with my daughter. I still have about $36k in insurance deductables etc etc.(HMO's aren't real big on patients seeking experts from around the country.....mine only paid 50% for specialist care)

I know the 308 is average or less recoiling round and brakes are available and I shoot heavier sniper rigs anyway.

But I am trying sell stuff off( my gun safe is down to a glock model 20.......it used to be standing room only.....medical bills suck as does getting old:)

I am scrapping together the dough for my own build....I have always built my own rigs but I am Considering going to a 6.5 versus a 308. I have been infatuated with the 6.5x47 Lapua and I have read alot about the 260 and 6.5 creedmore. I guess I like the Lapua brass and it seems like a real reloader friendly round and shoots flies out of the air. What do you guys think about the other 6.5's and why?

Also one thing holding me back is that with a 308 I would have more opportunities to compete.....everything has a 308 class and I wouldn't have to knock the rust off against the high speed low drag guys which I am no longer with their custom long range 6.5's or big mag cartridges. Plus as a teacher of tactical marksmanship and sniper training everything is still 308.......wooden bullets, plastic bullets, armor piercing, incidiary........plus if you run out at a bad time and components are short supply every store sells 308 ammo and bulk 147gr m60/m14 ammo worked well for 100 yard entry level students.

What would you do.....besides have one of each

Re: 6.5x47, 6.5 creedmore, 260 rem which???

From the tone of your post it sounds like you really want a 6.5mm.

Personally, I have learned many times (or perhaps I haven't learned), that taking the "simple" route is not always the right answer, as it has left me wishing I had done what I really wanted from the start.

Build the rifle you want, and have fun with it. A 6.5x47L is in my future - a lot to love with little downside.

Re: 6.5x47, 6.5 creedmore, 260 rem which???

I love the hell out of my 47L. Wish I had another one in a lighter combo. Really easy to load for and makes tiny lil bug hole ALL the time. Don't have to worry about OAL issues just like the creedmore. Guess it all comes down to the brass question.

Re: 6.5x47, 6.5 creedmore, 260 rem which???

I have a 47L being don right now. I originally told him 260, but he said the 47L was the way to go. He said every 47 he builds flat out shoots. And everyone I have talked to that has a 47L loves it.

Re: 6.5x47, 6.5 creedmore, 260 rem which???

Where in NW are you? There's a goon number of us shooting X47. Recoil is mild, significantly less than 308. You can just about watch your shots even at closer ranges (300-500yd).

Screw 308, you'll never look back.

Re: 6.5x47, 6.5 creedmore, 260 rem which???

You need a switch barrel. You can run all the calibers metioned for fairly low money.

I went with 6.5 CM and have no regrets. I eliminated 260 due to the limited factory ammo offerings at the time. I eliminated x47L due to it using small primers (not that that is a handicap, I just don't have any on hand and they are still kind of hard to find).

I run it on an AIAE, so if I want to shoot 308, I just screw on the other barrel and go.

Re: 6.5x47, 6.5 creedmore, 260 rem which???

you can't go wrong with any of the 6.5's they all have their ups and down's. if you really want a light recoiling rifle that shoots flat I would check out the 6mm's 6x47, 243, 6mm-250, 6xc, and my personal favorite 6mm dasher. all of those will push a 105 class 6mm bullet at least 3000fps and they have bc around .53-.56 which ballistically is a lazer and they have virtually no recoil if you get a brake on them.

I know I strayed away from your original question but I was trying to think outside the box. bottom line is all of the 6.5mms and 6mm's are great and I don't think you would regret any of them

Re: 6.5x47, 6.5 creedmore, 260 rem which???

i went with a 260

main reason i went with that over the x47 is that i have 5k 210m primers laying around it made it an easy decision

LOL Chad
i would post my targets but then op would for sure go x47

nice shooting thou bro

just not as good as a x47, yah know its all about the cal not the shooter.

any 6.5 is good, if you can shoot it...note Chad missed target 4 times
does that target meet LL reqs to be posted?
LOL
peace out Bro

Re: 6.5x47, 6.5 creedmore, 260 rem which???

missing the target is not a big deal when you are grouping and the group its about 1.5" at 600yards. that what chad was trying to point out.

my vote is for 260, anyway

That is true! I actually held more wind on that group on purpuse. I was hitting steel and holding about 1 MOA of wind. On my NF NP-R1 reticle, there is no exact hold for 1 MOA, just a half way between the cross hair and 2 MOA hash mark. So I held 2 MOA, which was right on the hash mark to shoot a precise group. I was floored when I went down and looked at the target.

Re: 6.5x47, 6.5 creedmore, 260 rem which???

Thanks for all of the input guys......and prior to posting I read of the kindly posted articles and more......many many more. And it left me..........undecided. But actually I have made progress I am down to the Lapua and the plain old 308.

I may use an AICS and the barrel swap makes huge sense. Now the real answer is for me to just order up a couple actions and find 2 stocks and 2 barrels etc etc. I say find because I hate getting fired up for a new build and waiting 3 months for a barrel to show up. Plus my wife walks by and sees my work bench and me staring at the parts and the next day nothing has moved......then she asks "how are those 2 year olds coming along" (horses) and I have to mumble some excuse about how I didn't ride today and they are behind etc etc.

My problem is I AM BROKE.........but shooting has been such a huge part of my life and was my career for a time...even my wife has said "you need to find a way to get back to your roots an start shooting again.......you don't seem right..you need your life back" Now I consider myself the most fotunate guy in the world.....great wife.....worlds best kid...great dog....great horses........but I have 1 gun in my gun safe....truth be told I even sold the safe. I kept the glock 20 as PDW and plus it kills bears and everything else that want to wander down my road and act tough or aggressive.

But I am an avererage handgunner........I started in handguns when I wa 18.......started with rifles at age 6. I am suffering from guilt (or my wife has diagnosed me as such) because I get offers still to earn good money overseas....I get emails about young guys lacking experience getting killed etc etc. I sit at home..........my wife say I can train up and go back for a 6 month run.....but my daughter is 8 and never has been away from me.......she is my shadow. I can't leave her so my wife thought I need to get back to teaching..training guys before they deploy again and maybe I'll sleep better and to start building 4-5 guns a year like a used to. But I'm broke I say and my wife says who cares do it anyway.........plus her and my daughter have told me they want me to teach them to shoot........me teaching my wife anything in the past has not gone well.......so I think its a plot to make me feel better.

Would I be a communist for not owning a 308? What about all of my 11 grain 4000fps plastic rounds......cheap in bulk or my wooden rounds or my tracers and incidniary rounds? Now it makes it easier because I don't have any on hand. BUt if I shoot a cool 6.5 Lapua I won't have easy access to that kinda stuff........plus I won't be able to enter some of the "stock" caliber matches or just buy Federal Gold Medal off of the shelf and shoot 1/2 moa.

I got to get off of here.......too much Red Bull....thanks for listening guys and the input.

For the record I live in SW WA and have my own little pice of heaven....I live out where the sign before my private road reads "Speed in the NAtional Forest is 35mph unless posted otherwise" I am the LAST mailbox. My road is 1/3 mile long and posted in several different manners including electronic survallience.....but the sign is spelled correctly. Nearest neighbor is over 1/2 mile driving but maybe 500 yards line of site. Across my road is nothing but nature.....I am the only home on the road........great place to shoot. I'd love to get together in the NW just to shoot and shoot the bull with other guys in the NW. But I have not shot a rifle in 4 years or so...I've lost about 80 use of my right arm however the sensation is getting better in my right hand.....especially my index finger.

I shoot about a box in my Glock 20 a month.......it cost about as much as a box of good 308 ammo. If nobody else is available I still do some SAR with my dog and a couple months ago the depart of corrections drove down my road and they had a escaped convict they wanted me to track so I still get a little action(these guys had a 3 strike convicted kidnapper and meth freak, gun crime guy out in wilderness work crew..real smart.....I guess thats why they didn't report it on the news)

Thanks again guys.......I need to lay off of the Redbull and I could save $200 a month

Take Care-Derek

Re: 6.5x47, 6.5 creedmore, 260 rem which???

If I have already picked out the fps I want out of a 6.5 Lapua and have mentally choosen the bullets and components is that a sign of leaning that way?? Derek
