6.5x47 Lapua....1:7" Twist Barrel.....22" or 24"?

I've got a project rifle, a friend talked me into a 1:7" twist barrel. It's a Rock Creek 5R stainless...my question is finished barrel length 22" vs. 24" w/ 139, 140 & 142 bullets.
Any thoughts?

1:7 is to fast, go 1:8

id go 24 better 26 inch

Too late...already have barrel, my thought is faster buring powder...shorter barrel and twist will work. I have another friend with a 1:7" twist on a 6.5 Creedmore and he loves it! It sports a 24" barrel.

22" then stretch it to 24" so you'll have a 1:8 twist.

Your velocity will be faster in a 1:8 or 1:8.5 twist barrel.

Ya I was thinking it would be running a little slower than the 1:8". Live and learn...Right?

20 or 22, not 24.
Run the 139 scenar
I use RL15, I'm sure RL17 will run well too.
I get close to 2800fps with 37gr RL15.

1-7 twist is quite fast for that caliber. 1-8.5 would be ideal.

Will a 1-9" stabilize a 139 scenar in sub zero temps?

Not sure about sub zero temps but here at the shop for our 6.5 caliber rifles we shoot 1-8.5, 1-8.75 and 1-9. Two of us use 142 SMK and one uses 139 Scenar.

I used 1-8.5 on my Krieger barrel @ 25", and couldn´t get it to shoot bad with Scenars 123gr and 139gr

, pushed the 139gr at 860m/s(2 821fps) and the 123gr at 939m/s(3 047fps) <-- pretty hot though...

With a 1-8 twist 30 inch tube chambered in 6.5x47 I was getting the 123's up to 3100 fps with no signs of pressure, but with the 139's I could only achieve 2850 with the powder I am allowed to use, now in a 1-8.5, I could have probably got 2950 fps.

Thanks for all the info, sounds like 22" on the barrel might be the ticket. Brux if you were gettin 123's to stabalize out of a 1:8", shouldn't be a problem with my 1:7" and 140's.

Yes but you are overtwisting the bullet losing precious velocity. A 1-8 can easily stabilize a 142, as can a 1-9 twist.

I have a 1:8 and 1:7.5 barrel I can use. Sounds like the 1:8 would be best to send off to get installed.
