I could use a bit of advice from those with experience. A good shooting friend needs some help with a 6 CM budget build. A bit of back story if you'll bear with me:

So, I finally was able to get out to shoot my new to me .260 custom I bought, from a great Hide member, today. I met a good friend and shooting buddy at the range this morning where I shot my new .260 and he had his Savage .338 LM. Well, short story is that the .338 is punishing him in the factory stock and he's beginning to realize that his past of motocross racing and broken collarbone makes it painful for him and he's developing a helluva flinch. After a box of .338 he was too sore to even enjoy my kickass .260.

We chatted, and I suggested he look into a 6 CM as I've been reading great things about the round. He's interested and the two of us are looking to qualify for LR practical matches locally, but I found out today that his shooting budget is severely crimped since his wife is currently unemployed. That definitely removes a GAP or other custom from his plans. So, back to the question.

I'm thinking a trued R700 action, quality barrel chambered and installed by a good smith, affordable starter stock such as a Boyd's or similar, and a decent low cost scope such as Sightron or Vortex PST. This for somewhere just over $2000. Upgrade stock and scope as things get better.

Is this out of line? Even doable?
I'm interested in your thoughts.

I'll probably ask more questions as this progresses.

6.5 CM instead of 6 CM, can buy factory ammo, relatively cheap. With a budget of $2k: Savage Model 12 LRP in 6.5CM, comes with 8twist, dbm, HS Precision stock, should be able to get it for ~ $1k. Leave $1k for rings, base & scope. Sightron SIII 6x24x50 lrmoa for $750 from Big Shop Supply, $250 left for rings & base.

That's it.

If he must go a custom route, then go with a straight .243Win in a 8-twist barrel.

The 6CM requires fireforming and reloading only proposition. .243Win Match ammo is available.

I don't think you're correct about the fireforming of the 6CM...GAP does sell it as formed 6CM.

6creed brass by hornady relatively cheap and GAP has them in stock.im building this rifle and bullets easy to come by.. get a used rem700sa action get the barrel of your choice n go with decent smith..your 2k should be enough.
Heres action in stock with trigger:IN STOCK
Remington Rifle Actions

No fire forming needed on 6 creed just buy proper head stamped brass from GA made by hornady. Also can just size down 6.5 cm brass if needed but sice GA still has some of the 6 just buy that. Better hurry as they don't have much left.

To me:

6CM = 6 Competition Match

If that was not what the OP was referring to, then disregard my post.

Using 6CM for 6mm Creedmoor is confusing, as 6CM has already been used for a previous wildcat.
Youre right on this.. 6cm is the true term for competition match.. hmm i wonder what op referin.. im guessing 6mm creedmoor

My mistake regarding the 6cm. I did really mean 6 creedmore. I did not know about the other wildcat round and was trying to save keystrokes on my phone.

I appreciate the advice and information from everyone. I really wish this was about me, but my budget is already blown to hell for this year, plus that .260 I mentioned above is really awesome and I'm pretty happy...for now... But a story for another thread.

In any case, it sounds doable. I need to get him on here for at least a visit.

Oh, and I just put an SIII 6-24x50 on my rifle and like it a lot, but think he should make his own choice.

And thanks for the link, bjay.
