I have had good results with the BH 68 grain and was considering trying the 69 SMK. Has anyone found that the 69 grain performs better. I have held off so far because I always thought that a 69 grain would need at least a 1/8 twist.

no the SPS Tactical is a 1:9 twist, im shooting the 77 SMKs right now, its not so much the weight of the bullet as it is the length of the bullet that determines what twist you need.

Re: 69 grain or 68 grain (Rem. sps Tactical 223)

My boxes of Sierra 69 grains say 7" - 10" TWIST BBLS ONLY.

The most recent Sierra Reloading Manual, the 5th edition, still says 7-10 for the 69 grain and the 77 and 80 grain need 7" to 8" twist. That is why I am not in the market for a 1:9 twist Remington rifle. I have a bunch of 80 grain bullets. They are a single load proposition because they do not fit in the magazine, but for slow fire they are great.

But, that's my two cents worth.

Im the same way as SFC....i shoot the 77s only now out of my 1:9 SPS Tac. It hammers to

23.2 Benchmark (this is over recommended max so work up to it)
Win Brass neck sized
77 SMK
Winchester SR primer
just kissing the lands...running about 2720 out of the factory barrel....I run the 223 AICS mags so i can load them i tad longer.

The 69 gr SMKs shoot great in all my 1:9 AR barrels. Actually it's the most accurate bullet I've come across for 1:9. It is noticeably more accurate than the 68 grain (Hornady bullet, right?), for me at least. About 5/8 MOA vs 1 MOA out of stock Bushy and RR 16" barrels, so maybe not that big of a difference, depending on your needs.

I feel like I've heard other people say the same thing. The 69 grain SMKs seem to be the bees knees for 1:9 twists.

The 69s shoot great out of my sps. 20 inch 1/9. I haven't gone to anything heavier yet, but for what I use it for I really haven't needed to. I bet if yours shot the 68s it will like the 69s as well. I vote buy a couple boxes.
