6x47 lapua...What twist for 115 bergers

I have been shooting 105 amaxs in my Stiller Tac 30 6x47 with 23" shilen #5 contour barrel. Does anyone know if the 115s will be stabilized in the 8 twist barrel. I know that button rifled barrel twists are not exact, so was wondering if anyone has had success with the 115s in an 8 twist barrel.

I have run some of the numbers, but off the top of my head can't remember if there is an advantage in wind drift to using the 115s over the 105 amaxs i'm shooting now.

Been very happy with this rifle. I have gotten less that .5 moa out to 665 pretty consistently. Even then there is usually less than 2 inches of vertical. The one time that I shot at 925, wind played hell, but 5 shots had about 2" of vertical there also. Getting 2970 with the amaxs.

Thanks.

Are you shooting Bergers or DTACs? Is there another bullet I'm not aware of. thanks.

What kind of velocity are you getting? Barrel length? Thanks.

I have been real pleased with the amaxs. I shot a couple hundred of the bergers, but the amaxs seem to shoot better (plus they are cheaper).

What kind of barrel life are you getting/expecting. IIRC, the throat moved .004" in the first hundred or couple hundred rounds. H4350 at 2950-2995 depending on bullet and load. I am running a 23" shilen barrel.

Did shoot some Reloader 17 with the 105 bergers. accurate node at 2850 and a little above 3000. The node at 2850 was most accurate.

If it's the 115 Bergers I would run with a 7.5" twist as an 8" twist can be right on the edge. DTAC's can run well with a true 8" twist, but I had an 8" twist button rifled barrel that was a little off and none of the 115's would stabilize in that barrel.

mine is benchmark 25" button rifled and i shoot dtacs very well even when its cold. don't bother with the berger, even berger recommends the 105s.

I am gonna give the 105 bergers a try here soon in my savage. But I talked to someone today at a place I get my reloading stuff and they said for sure the amax's are coming soon. So ill be anxious

Re: 6x47 lapua...What twist for 115 bergers

i run the 105 amaxes in my 7.5 twist 6x47 L.

115 Dtacs won't stabilize here in my 243AI 8 twist.

Even David Tubb told me to shoot the 105's unless I ran a 7.5 twist...

I called Hornady about a month ago trying to find out where I could buy 105 amaxs. The lady I spoke with was extremely helpful. She told me that the last run of 105s was in 2009 (early 2009, i think) and that Hornady would be producing the 105s later in October. She asked if I had backorders with anyone. I have orders in with a couple of places. She looked up some distribution info (I guess) and told me that the two places I had orders with were among the first to be receiving shipments of bullets.

So....We should be seeing 105 amaxs arrive soon.

Re: 6x47 lapua...What twist for 115 bergers

several years ago i ran a lot of different heavy 6mm projectiles and of those, DTAC's always shot the best.

I had a hell of a problem running one, and only one projectile, and that turned out to be the Berger 115's.

I even had a custom krieger barrel with a 1 : 6.75" twist rate made in an attempt to get the Berger 115's to shoot as well as the DTAC 115's (which at that time were selling out as quickly as they could be made). Not even that worked to my saticfaction and I ended up giving up on the Berger 115's.

Fortunately, I was selected to test the then-new Berger 108's. I test fired the new Berger 108's at 200 yards using the same Krieger barrel I had used for the 115's and fired back to back five-shot one hole groups ("ugly" one holes, but still one hole groups). The 108's didn't, and still don't, have the high BC that the Berger 115's do, but who cares when the 108's always hit and the 115's were a wild ass guess at best?

If I were to get back into shooting 6mm again, I'd jump at shooting the Berger 108's. I doubt I would invest much time in trying the Berger 115's. Maybe buy a box and if the barrel liked them, then great. If not, just skip back to the SMK's, Lapua's and Berger 108's again.

My two cents.
