6X5 Thread V5.0 *new 1/1/21*

I gave this a go today. Windy conditions. 18mph + 8'oclock winds with tree lines and buildings making the direction shift and swirl. I shot 5 targets and these were my best two.

Sorry, I didn't get a pic of my setup at the range, I forgot. I was shooting my Anschutz Super Match '61 topped with a 30x40 Leupold scope.

Yes, that's actually 5 shots on group #6.

Thought I would take a go at a 6x5 this evening, and ended up shooting my two best groups so far.
Not quite good enough to beat my previous average though. I'll keep practicing.
I changed over to a Spuhr mount last night, and sighted the rifle in this evening, prior to trying the 6x5.
It was shooting to the right about 10 mils. That's where the shot marked N/A on the 6x5 came from.

Nice equipment and shooting! What muzzle break are you using or is it a tuner/break?

Thank you sir!
It's an Area 419 Hellfire 2P muzzle brake.
I needed a little extra weight forward, to help with the balance, and that was part of the solution.

Jeronimo, I have your best group updated nice shooting.

CoolJJ, I have you on the results. But were these targets shot with irons, or do you put a scope on the rifle?? If so damn! Can you see well enough to resolve the targets to aim?

Nope, no way I could see those targets with irons. Scope was mentioned in the details above. Leupold 30x40.

Good shooting j , do you know what causes the hi shots as in groups 3&4 ? Or even a guess? I have the same problem. But l don’t have the prob you had on 1&2!!

It could be any number of things Cuzz.
I did a magazine change between groups 2 and 3, came off the rifle, and probably changed my hold.
May have had some time pressure, as I was rapidly losing daylight.
It doesn't look like it in the pictures, but it was starting to get dim, especially where the target stood.
Then there's always the Caldwell "Unstable Table"!!:poop:

Thanks for the info. It looks like it didn't effect accuracy, which was a concern of mine.

I just don't like the look of the thread cap, but didn't want to spend a lot of money to find out it degrades accuracy.

No problem.
No, I don't think it's hurting the accuracy this rifle is capable of at all.
It has the added benefit of making the 18" Ace Kukri Barrel look more proportional to the stock.

Well in anticipation of my vudoo components coming in, I decided to try again with the all stock MTR. Hopefully my next submissions are better and coming from a new vudoo.

50 yards
Center-X
Avg. .308
Best .219

Switched to the 100 yard. I was a Little too late in the morning as the winds picked up for this evening’s storms. I was measuring gust of 5 to 12 miles an hour on the kestrel.

100 yard (held 7 MOA elevation)
Center-X
Avg. .719
Best .625

I tried to chase the bullseye after the first two rounds of five considering I was right on the edge of the paper. I’m thinking 25 power might not be enough for my eyes at 100. Given my 50 yard average, what is the consensus on the 100 yard? Am I that bad of a shooter, or is the gun and ammo combo not that great?I’ve got roughly 5000 rounds through the gun and never cleaned it.

Those 50 yd groups look pretty good to me, the low 3's average @ 50 isnt bad at all with a stock factory rifle in my opinion, it performs much like my MTR. The 5k rounds and no cleaning is interesting, doesnt seem to hurt the accuracy any, good post, nice shooting.

Ranges finally opened. Rainy, windy day with a break of sun! Had to shoot the Vudoo that's been sitting unshot for 2 months. Magazines had a lot of feed issues, but after I ran a few they all broke in.

Best of the day was SK+
50 yards
Average = .232"
Best = .177"

The circled shot on the first set was me adjusting the scope incorrectly as I didn't want to go off the paper after the first two groups. I shot once and went oops, dialed the other way and shot 5. So maybe this would be an invalid 6x5.

Best 50 yard group was .111 with Pistol Match Special, but a pulled shot (3rd group bullseye), and then crazy wind swirl on my 6th group screwed that set up. I should've waited on that 6th set. Eley Force (not Edge I miswrote in the picture) groups fantastically well, but man I have to put so much force on the bolt to close it. Gave up after 5 rounds, and refouled with SK+ and did another 6x5 with it.

Overall 350 rounds through it, looking forward to shooting it more, but I'll be working on drills for PRS versus groups so probably won't run a 6x5 for a while.

Littlepod, I have your V-22 on the results. It looks to me your best group was 0.111” not 0.177” so that is what I used.

jbell, I was able to get out and shoot today, but the winds were quite challenging. From the north at 14 and variable, they bullied me all over the place. My first 6x5, so not bad. I was able to hold off on some of the groups until the winds switched and died down a bit. I'll be back for sure with some better scores and improved group average next weekend.

Thanks very much for coordinating this "match". Let me know if you need any additional details? I think I have everything you need on the target.

@jbell, this is a cool dataset. I've been pondering standardizing the dataset and adding a few fields of interest going forward due to coming changes from Vudoo and competitors (barrel twist rates, firing pin position, ammo, etc). This would be interesting to have for analysis.

Going forward, could the following be done?
  1. Compile the results in table format.
  2. Keep all results so a screen name/rifle can be tracked over time. I believe now the old results are removed and replaced with best scores.
  3. Standardize the fields to (other suggestions?):
    1. SCREEN_NAME
    2. AVG_GROUP
    3. AVG_MOA
    4. BEST_GROUP
    5. BEST_MOA
    6. MAKE
    7. MODEL
    8. BARREL
    9. FIRING_PIN
    10. TWIST
    11. CALIBER
    12. AMMO
    13. SIGHT
    14. DATE
  4. The above fields/data would be tracked for each post and kept as a record so old results don't disappear.
  5. This could be kept in a google spreadsheet, sorted by AVG_GROUP, and pasted here for each distance.
  6. The google spreadsheet could also be made publicly available as a csv, xlsx, ods, or html page.
I took ALL the previous data and compiled it into a spreadsheet. I tried my best to align the data for average and best groups. I believe the best groups were replaced as new ones were posted and they don't necessarily line up with the last average posted. It's kind of a fudge, but it's close enough. I also tried to standardize all the make/model names and barrel makers. I assumed a 1:16 twist unless specified otherwise or a different caliber than 22lr. Same thing for firing pin and barrel make which I assumed to be 12 o'clock and factory respectively unless specified otherwise. For Vudoo rifles, I assumed an Ace barrel unless specified. If another distance was specified, I rounded to the nearest of 50, 100, or 200 since that's how it was originally grouped. Some data is missing, but maybe it can be filled in as we go.

Here's the google spreadsheet downloadable as an Excel file or viewable as an html file.

What do you think?

Here's an example of the 200yd results pasted below since it's short.

jbell, sorry, I just noticed I did not include a picture of my setup.

Anschutz 1903 in an Anschutz benchrest stock (SBR), Caldwell BR rest, shot from the bench. Also, the temperature was below 40F.

First time out in weeks, so a little rusty.
Not too bad for 50 yards, but this gun has done better in the past.
Vudoo Ridgeback 18” Kukri
50 yards
X-Act
Bench
Avg - .246
Best - .171

I also shot 100 yards but averaged .937, so not that great. Didn’t want to post, this gun has done way better than that at 100 yards.

Brand new gun, 1st time to the range since the virus hit, 1st 6x5 ever. Not great results, but I had a blast. About 20 shots to zero the scope, lube and warm up the barrel.

18" Bartlein barrel, MTU profile

Athlon Argos 10-40x56 set on 30x
Bravo stock w/ 2-3/4" x 9" alum. plate to ride the rest
Caldwell BR, rear bag
50 yds. Indoors

7x 5 ( I forgot I shot the top right target to start with, and shot 6 more, am I a dumb ass or what?)

Hey guys, sorry I have been slow on updating this thread this weekend. It is great to see so many new entries the last few days! I have all the new entries in and the improvements updated.

Welcome to the 6X5 Rimfireshooter99 & 45ACP223!
Rainier, nice to see you back.
drglock, good shooting @ 100!
Orkan, your consistency is very impressive as is the accuracy your getting out of that TS Customs RimX. That is looking to be another great option for the precision rimfire rifle world.

That would be awesome to have all that data in a format like that. But honestly it would require too much time to maintain it. Keeping up with this thread is pretty time consuming as it is, I just don’t have the time to allocate adding more data fields in a more complex (all be it a more useful and easier to read) format. The main reason I have more than one iteration of this thread is after 50-60 entries it is very difficult to keep track of it all and shuffle it around to keep it in order. I need to keep it as simple as possible.

I really like the idea! But I think it would be too time consuming for me...

This looks like my 100 yard targets: from .533 to 1.397. There’s always that 1, or 2 groups, that mess up the whole thing! One day I’ll get 6 good ones in a row! :)

jbell, I was able to shoot my second 6x5 today @50 yards. Improved on both the overall average (0.354) and the individual group size (0.214). Had miserable conditions today, with light rain and 9mph winds. But, I was able to find some "quiet" times, to shoot. Ans 1903 SBR, Athlon 10-40, Caldwell rest, LCX ammo.

Thanks!

jbell, is there a location where I can see the current list you are maintaining? I'd like to see what the competition has done at the various distances.

Thanks!

jbell, never mind, I found it. Please check your input on my first 6x5. I should be lower on the list, maybe 20th, rather than in 9th position.

Thanks!

Yeah, I saw that when I just updated your last entry. Not sure how I messed that one up, numbers are hard... HA Thanks!
jbell, no worry at all. It's got to be a great challenge to keep the list current, and you do a great job for all of us. Thanks for all you do! When I next shoot, I will get a pic of my setup and send it to you.

Thanks again!

No problem, I already did the work of compiling everyone's results into a google spreadsheet. I'll keep my own running tally and post the link occasionally.

Here's the google spreadsheet downloadable as an Excel file or viewable as an html file.

It would make it easy to track scores if everyone could post in the following format.
  1. AVG_GROUP
  2. BEST_GROUP
  3. MAKE
  4. MODEL
  5. BARREL
  6. FIRING_PIN
  7. TWIST
  8. CALIBER
  9. AMMO
  10. SIGHT
  11. DATE
:)

What was your poa? Top right-hand corner of the boxes? Or were you using the center target and dialing a consistent offset? I always like looking for positional influence in the groups

reubenski, I never thought of setting an offset on the scope while keeping the poa the center dot or crosshair. I sighted in my new scope to the poa, and after a shot or two your reference poa is hard to line up. Having a consistent poa away from the bullet impact should help tighten up the groups.

Note to myself: adjust an offset in the scope the next time out you dumb ass! :)

I didn't check my parallax on my groups, nor did I know the dope of my Pistol Match Special. Rifle was zeroed with SK+, and I just dialed up to what I thought would be correct for Pistol Match Special and shot (1.9mil @ 103.5 yards).

Ultimately I liked that the rifle shot .2mil high as my POA was uncluttered. I find it horrible when my POA is shot through as I notice my reticle tends to move a lot when shooting into black holes... I had some feed issues, which caused me to get up and unjam and reload, which I think was my worst group too. You can tell that group definitely isn't the same POI as all the other groups.

Afterwards I mucked with my ballistics app, and my Pistol Match Special actually matches the same .172 G1 BC as center-x on the vudoo, except Center-X is 1077 fps, and PMS is 1130.. (It didn't on my Tikka). So I have 1.7mil at 103.5 yards. 6.3mils at 200 yards. (Down .1 @ 50 yards).

I just lot tested some SK Pistol Match Special.
Still clearly some issues holding the rifle the right way. Don't know what is wrong with me.

I shot all my loaded mags (25 shots) and then wondered if I should buy the lot or not so shot few SK Pistol Matches to compare it.

I returned to shooting SK PMS after that paper and shot 1.08" (averaging 0.95MOA) and also 1.75" and 1.01" groups.

Definitely going to buy it!!

The rifle (Quad) and range is the same as on my profile picture.

Btw, this was cold bore and had done loads of dry-fire so the barrel was quite much filled with priming residue from hammering those used cases.

Cuzz, that's some fine shooting! I've been waiting to see more info about the Vudoo BR rifle but when I look at your rifle and data, it's hard to imagine a BR version will shoot better than I'm seeing you shoot from a bipod and bag.

Very nice work with your rifle!

Just got back from the range. FINALLY caught a day with virtually no wind. Got there at 8am after looking at the weather and seeing it dead out there. Had some 5mph gusts here and there but Ill call that dead compared to the last month of windy days! This Keystone Accuracy RimX Green Mountain is straight hammering at both 50yd and 100yds. Some tiny ass groups laid down and awesome 10x5 and 6x5 numbers. Best deal on RimX barrels going right now for the money.

Zermatt RimX
20" Keystone Accuracy Green Mountain
22LR Match Eachus chamber (my custom chamber)
100yds
0-5mph infrequent breeze
56F

This chamber continues to shot it shoots almost everything I throw at it good. I have not lot tested or cherry picked this as magical ammo. I grabbed and shot 2 lots of new bricks of CenterX I just received and shot at 50yds, and same lot of Ultramatch Ive been shooting. Shot them all great. That best group of 0.187" is just awesome. This Keystone Accuracy GM has shot my personal best in group size at both 50 and 100yd, best 6x5's, and 10x5's.

I have ever shot fired on the below target on video from this morning. Just gotta pull it off my 4K camcorder and post it up.

Best 10x5: 0.662"
Best 6x5: 0.592"
Best Group: 0.187"
