6X5 Thread V5.0 *new 1/1/21*

OK, well 10/22 day last week got me to get my KIDD out and do some quick ammo testing. Results are below. Please feel free to check my math but I believe this is correct. Edit: 50yd, bench with bipod and rear bag, 66* with about 4mph ESE wind.

I want to shoot a 200 yard card next, but wondering what ammo I should use.

I've used RWS Special Match and RWS R100 at 100 yds. RWS100 gives me better results, but it is supersonic ammo so will go subsonic well before 200 yards. Also the name "R100" makes me wonder if it is optimised for 100 yards/100 metres.

Will RWS R100 work out to 200y or should I be thinking about something else? FYI I've tried Lapua Center-X; my rifle doesn't really like it.

I’ve not tried RwS so can’t speak to that. I did try a bit of Wolf MT ( Eley ) but wasn’t impressed at 200 so don’t shoot that in our 2 T1x’s

What we did was set up some targets and shot 5x5’s at them on various days.

Here is an example of my targets using SK STD+, SK RM, and Lapua CX. You can see my rifle didn’t like this particular lot of RM. the STD+ did better but still throws a flier or 2 in there from time to time. The CX is much more consistent. We also tried some Xact ( random lot) but didn’t feel it was worth the extra $$

My best advice is to shoot some 6x5’s of various ammo on multiple days to get the best idea of what a particular ammo is going to do.

I’ll also include our first go at 300 with the CX. It was very windy that day so looking forward to getting back out with less wind to see how the CX does.

Our CX experience is based on 2 lots. They are very close in performance and we are very happy with it.

Looking forward to getting our T1x’s to the Lapua center for testing to really see what they are capable of.

I took my new 1971 1416 out for the first time last Wednesday.

It shot well, I did and didn't.

Average for 14 groups @ 50m/55y is .741", best 6 consecutive groups .633" Small group .214, large 1.904.

More shooting to be done, but I'm happy for now.

Thanks J Bell.
Maybe a better rest would be an idea, but I like the old Landcruiser too much to change.

Got my replacement 1st Gen PST from Vortex and tried the 6X5 with my T1X in a Bravo chassis (action screws are at 40 in lbs). Range is 50 yards. Nothing stellar, but a good base line and comparable accuracy from non-match ammo (Eley SV/CCI SV/Aguila SE). Not making excuses, but I honestly feel the flyers on group #3 & #6 were due to a slightly numb trigger finger. I will try some Center X when the temps are a little warmer.

Thanks! I live in South Dakota. I am really interested in how it will shoot with Center X and a little sunshine. ;)

My first submission for 100 yards as the winds were light today except during groups 4 & 5, details shown on the target.

Had a little nicer weather over the last couple of days and got the magnum Annie's out for some 50 and 100 yard 6x5. First off the 1720 topped with a Z5 3.5-18X shooting Hornady 30 gr V-Max ammo.....

I finally got around to shooting a target. It is my personal back up gun with a new Muller barrel that I lapped and chambered on my 2500X with a Rotex Dymalux stock, PQP trigger, 15-55 Nightforce Comp scope and my Holeshot Tuner set at 205 shot off of our Joystick one piece rest. This gun has always been a pretty good gun overall. It is my backup at the moment for ARA and PSL matches. This barrel is probably a little better than the one that was on it. Each group is a different lot of Eley ammo I have, the lot numbers are on the top. All of the lots have been good in most of my guns. I used your rules to measure them to the nearest 0.01 and got a 0.138 average, this is at 50 yards. If measured by a true BR group device method, it would most likely be about 0.020 bigger. The target is the sighters on the bottom of an ARA target. The outside of the blue ring is very close to 0.500. This is what a good/great dedicated BR 22 gun should do.

Is this Jerry Stiller of Stiller Actions? If so I would first like to say I am honored to have you here on the 6X5 thread and welcome! I also would like to say in a public forum thank you for all you have done for me in the past, you sir are a class act and I can not say enough good things about you and Russ.

If this is not Jerry, still welcome to the 6X5 thread and that is some excellent shooting! I have you on the results and am looking forward to more.

why do I suddenly feel like a small child at the little table at Thanksgiving?........

Yep, that is me. FORMER owner of Stillers Precision Firearms. Sold it about 4 years ago and is now owned by Dale Troutt under the Stillers Actions name. I now run a much smaller company called Holeshot Arms, TRY to get time to work on old muscle cars and pretend to retire. We only do 22lr BR actions and rifles and build a lot of Killough's stuff he sells like rests, tuners, cleaning rods etc (there's only 2 of us, just me and Bad Bob). We work with Mullerworks barrels a lot and test new stuff for him. I also lap all my own barrels because I can get them easier that way.

I agree, Russ is a great guy and my success largely depended on him. He is now at Bugholes. I am glad to be here and help in any way that I can.

Anybody that is a Marine sits at the big table no matter where they go, if I am there with you it will be an honor and I'll do the dishes. Thank you all for your service! (that applies to all the services)

I did not know that you sold the company, enjoy the “retirement“. Dan Killough is a great guy too, as you he too has done a lot for the sport. I will definitely be checking out Holeshot Arms.

Nice to finally see a competition bench rest shooter participate in this. I was always interested to see what a good BR gun and shooter could do in this challenge.

I'd really, really like to see a 6x5 at 100 and a 50 at 100 shot by you !

Slowly but surely I am getting these groups smaller. Here are my 50 yard groups from last Sunday. Later that afternoon I got over to the 200 yard range and tried it for the first time with rimfire. Lets just say I'm not ready to post any of those groups yet. A bit tougher than I expected.

I got out to let my daughters shoot their Vudoo's some today. The conditions were not great, with the air temp in the high 30's and a little breezy 4-10 mph. The girls haven't shot much at all in a long time but as long as I can keep finding ammo that's going to change I hope.

They have identical Vudoo V-22 (Gen 2 action) one is a 20" Kukri and the other is a 22" Kukri, both in Bravo chassis, both have Timney 2 stage triggers (not my favorite trigger, but not too bad), they both have Vortex Gen II Razor 4.5-27 with the EBR1C in Vortex rings (however one razor is at Vortex right now for a canted reticle, so that rifle has my back up scope on it DMR II PRO).

Each girl shot a 6X5 with each rifle and by the end of it they were pretty cold and ready to go warm up. We need to work on consistency a bit, but it will come. Great day behind the spotting scope for me!!

@jbell you gotta come to our next NRL22 match in December. It's mellow and fun. I shot this page warming up this cooold morning at 8am, with the SK Biathlon you pointed me to. Thanks for that. Top center was first x10 with my old CenterX zero, all rest were new zero x5 and x10 and x3 groups and few dots for 100 total. Got 50 on the magnetospeed before the 10am match. SKB shot really well, took the win today, good group of MMPRL folks. Next match is early December!!

Very cool! Is it in Scarborough Next month? What is the general course of fire? I may have my girls shoot it...

Yup! Always @9:30, regular 5 stage published NRL22 cof, every month, can probably go to the 300yd line too afterwards, since no centerfire rifle matches going on.
Edit to add: we have a 55g drum firebox at the firing line for winter! 🔥

Time to shake up the 6X5 list. :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO:

I guess it shows my age, but when I was a teen, we used to shoot ground squirrels almost every day. At that time a 50 round box normal price for most ammo was $0.89 and you could get some "lead heads" as we used to call them for 50 to 60 cents a box on sale. Probably late 70's. One time the "Gibsons Discount Store" had 100 round CCI on sale for 99 cents.

I skipped out of work early enough today to get the girls back to the range and let them work on their shooting a little. Today they learned how to identify and correct parallax. Plus we focused on the basics of proper shot execution. I have to say I'm very impressed with what I saw. It is so enjoyable standing behind them on the spotter watching them work.

These were shot by my daughters Payton who is 15 and Emily who is 14. Payton was shooting the 22" kukri rifle and Emily was on the 20" Kukri. I was having so much fun watching them that I didn't get any pictures of the action.

These were shot prone off the Atlas CAL and a TAB rear bag at 100 yards and the cold bore for each rifle and shooter is included (as noted on the target), no warm ups for them!

IMG_20201120_163507654.jpg

Oh in addition to having the girls work on the basics of proper shot execution and correcting parallax I only put up 5 targets and had them mil the distance between the two right targets and dial half the distance up and shoot at the bottom right target (to practice using the reticle and dialing corrections). I just gave them a quick period of instruction and told them to do it. The last group is pretty centered between the two targets, not too bad for the first time.

I probably should not even post here. Trying to learn and repeat the same thing every time. This is more difficult than I expected. I have only tested CCI SV and Wolf ME.

I thought my son did pretty good. I haven't measured. Wind variable up to 4 changing from out of the north to out of the south. We shoot north. Temp high 40's. I didn't check barametric pressure.

Stock CZ452 varmint. L VX 3, 2.5x8 36mm objective. Picnic table is my bench leveled with rocks. Chair is PVC deck chair.I will begin shooting true 6x5 and see how we do.

SCRAM2013, your welcome to post anything at any time here as far as I am concerned. We are all here to learn and everyone has value to add.

One recommendation on targets, those shoot and see are very difficult to measure group size on. I am looking forward to seeing some of your targets soon.
