7-08 vs. 284 Win Pro's and Con's

I'm looking into the two for a future build and was wondering if the book gains of the 284 win would be realised in a 22" or so barrel. Also I've looked and only found 3000 as a barrel life expectation, but that was on 6mmbr.com so I'm guessing they would replace way before I would notice a real drop. Whats a realistic barrel life on the 284 win.

Any other pros and con's you can think of that I might be missing.

The ballistics work out to the 284 having about 1.5" less wind drift at 500 yards and about 8" less at 1000 in a 10 mph cross wind. {708 162AMax .625bc at 2650, 284 180 Berg .648bc at 2750}

To get this you burn 10+ more grains of powder in the 284 with more recoil and less barrel life. Both perform great with the good 7mm bullets. Pick your poison.

Build a longer barreled 284 and it's ballistics will improve a bit.

i have no experience with the 7-08 so i can't comment there but a 284 is pretty easy to get a 180 vld to 2850 fps in a long action. i run 175 smk's to 2850 fps with a 27" barrel with what my brass is showing, a mild load.

30 Sniper, absoultly, but he's talking about 22". If I were building a 284 I'd go 28"-30" and watch the fun happen.

I talked with Seekins a few weeks ago and his WSM bottom metal will work with a 284 on a SA 700. The inside mag oal is 3.140".
Probably need to open and bevel the rear ring for ejection and of course open the bottom of the action for the DBM but that would build a nice 284.

I have a 7-08 and get 2750 out of a 25" tube.

i'm sorry about that. it's been a long day and i guess i didn't bother reading the op's post completely. in a 22" barrel, and i had to have a 7mm, the 7-08 would be appealing, especially in a short action.

we are going to install one of the seekins bottom metals on a 7wsm as soon as we get it. the plan is a 3.1" oal with 180 vlds. i will look at it and see how it looks for a 284 since i am curious about it also. the magazine capacity and availability is what is probably going to be the deal killer for me. i can fit 6 284 rounds in a 5 round 300 win mag aics magazine.

I am getting 2600fps out of my 18" 7mm-08 with IMR4064...gonna try RL17 and see if I can gain any velocity.

I would go with the 7mm-08 if you wanted to run a shorter barrel. 284 Win is a more potent round but needs a longer barrel to really have any noticable effectiveness over the 7mm-08.

RL17 is what I'm using. I picked up about 50fps over H4350, with excellent accuracy. I think it might work good in the 284 too.

I got 2723fps out of my 7-08 with the 162's over 40.3 I4895. Popped 4 out of 80 primers at 80*f last time it was out though.

I'm not sure if I want to try <span style="text-decoration: line-through">RL19</span>RL17 or H4350 next. I just got a stock with Seekins 308 DBM so I'm gonna load to 2.935-2.940" now instead of 2.835".

I think .284 would be cool if I had a long action (or a Salvage "med" 110 action.
