Looking to up grade my 16" dpms with a 24" barrel but I'm trying to figure out if it matters if it is a 7.62x51 or a .308 I would like the option to be able to use both. The barrel thats on it now is a 7.62 but all of the 24s I see are .308. Thanks for yor help.

Re: 7.62 nato vs. .308

This has been discussed to no end. But the short answer is no it doesn't matter. Both rounds have the same exterior dimensions. But the brass is specs differently in wall thickness and pressures. Either chamber is capable of runner either designation.

Re: 7.62 nato vs. .308

The differences between the two are so much closer than 5.56/.223 that it doesn't matter. Technically, you aren't supposed to shoot hot .308 Win from a 7.62 NATO chambered rifle. Theoretically, you could overpressure the gun and blow it up. It's the opposite of 5.56/.223. This confusion comes from the fact that different measurement systems were used between the two, CUP for the NATO round and PSI for the .308. The headspace specs are different as well, but the reality is that only really old NATO spec 7.62 guns are likely to be anywhere near the max headspace, and create a danger scenario.

Great explanation. Thanks

Re: 7.62 nato vs. .308

In practical terms, all you're looking at is:

1. Min-length ammo fired in a max-length NATO chamber stretches more and could fail somewhere forward of the head after fewer reloads than would kill that same ammo fired in a max-length SAAMI chamber.

It's all safe for the first firing.

2. The only true "problems" with NATO rifles were some OLD Mausers re-chambered for 7.62 that were barely up to snuff under ideal conditions. All the military-style semiautos and commercial bolt guns can shoot both just fine.

3. The *ammo* differences affect charge weight and pressure performance in reloads. I unfortunately don't remember where, but the few times I've seen the same ammo measured CUP and piezo PSI, there was hardly any difference between SAAMI and NATO pressures.

4. Almost no one I've ever discussed this with had bothered to LOOK at what the .015 or whatever difference in chamber dimensions really looks like. Brass cases stretch and steel ones slide back to the boltface...and keep on performing their functions.

There is as much variance with .308 ammo with .308 ammo, as their is with .308 and 7.62 NATO.
