7.62 Rifle Questions

I'm new to this forum, and to these guns in particular. I'm not new to shooting, however. My question has to do with the various KAC 7.62 rifles and to the LWRC REPR. I've looked at the KAC website, but not found the answer I'm looking for, so I hope someone here can be of help. What are the differences between the various KAC offerings, specifically the SR-25 ER, the SR-25 ECR, and the SR-25 EM? How do these rifles compare to the Mk11 Mod0 and/or the M110? What makes one different from the other, from a features standpoint? Which of these rifles would be closest to the features on the LWRC REPR (other than the fact that the REPR is piston-driven, obviously)? And perhaps a stupid question, but what makes these more expensive rifles better than say a DPMS or a Rock River 7.62 rifle? What are you getting for the extra $$? I'm not trying to ask a stupid question, but to really understand what you are getting for the extra $$.

Thanks for the input...and remember, I'm a new guy here!

Re: 7.62 Rifle Questions

From what I understand, you're buying quality and the name. I'm sure everyone's opinion on this will be different. Some people swear by KAC products and others have had issues with them. And by issues I mean, people feel there shouldn't be any kind of problems with their rifle when paying that kind of money. However, any rifle can have issues. I think the DPMS would be a great choice, and a KAC would most likely be a better choice. With that being said, I think building one yourself is the best choice. Again, this is my opinion. I hope this helps, but when it comes down to it, it's personal preference. What works best for you financially for your implied purpose.

I'm guessing the newer SR-25 models (whichever were shown at SHOT Show 2012) that have the URX-III fore-end (correct me if I'm wrong) would be closest to the REPR in the sense that it has a fore-end with rail attachments that connect where the user needs them, rather than full length rails on all four sides.

No SR-25 will have the FAL-esque side charging handle like the REPR.

All KAC rifles (SR-15 & SR-25 series) on the market are DI.

Found this on arfcom regarding the newer SR-25 offerings from KAC:

<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Quote:</div><div class="ubbcode-body">I'll give a bit of a break down as to how things are going. Enhanced Match (EM) series for all intensive purposes is being rename so that means that once we sell the remaining EMC's and EMR in stock they will not be available again.

Now here is what we will be showing at SHOT:

The Enhanced Rifle (ER) is essentially the same as EMR just with the uprgraded ejection port and associated door assembly.
Enhanced Carbine (EC) is a 16" heavy bbl non-ball milled lightened barrel, no dimples, and a non-chrome lined barrel at a very reasonable price to be announced at SHOT.

The Enhanced Combat Series

Enhanced Combat Rifle (ECR) will feature a 20" bbl with our new URX 3.1 rail system, QDC flash hider, collapsible butt stock assembly, & 45 degree offset BUIS
Enhanced Combat Carbine (ECC) will have a 16" chrome lined dimpled bbl with the URX 3.1, QDC flash hider, Carbon cutter Bolt Carrier, & 45 degree offset BUIS

The enhanced combat series will have the latest features we have coming out. However the ER and EC are intended to be price point guns that still offer very capable systems at some of the lowest price we have ever sold SR-25's for.Hopefully this will answer some questions floating out there.

If I had which model is closer the EMC I wold say it is the Enhanced Combat Carbine or ECC and here's a list of features both models share:

16" chrome lined dimpled bbl with flashider granted the ECC has an updated version of this.
carbon cutter bolt carrier
enhanced ejection port and door assembly
enhanced buffer and tube assembly.

However the older EMC happens to share a few feature with the Enhanced Carbine or EC as well:

Rifle length URX II
M110 flash hider
enhanced ejection port and door assembly

From top to bottom

SR-25 ECR 10.4lbs P/N 30289 MSRP $5,618.75
SR-25 ECC 9.12lbs P/N 30313 MSRP $5,743.75 (upgraded EMC)
...Ambi bolt release and safety
...16" Dimpled barrel (barrel is .7 lb lighter than EC)
...Carbon cutter bolt carrier
...New URX 3.1 rail
...762QDC Flash Hider
...Enhanced buffer and tube assembly
...45 degree offset BUIS
SR-25 EC 10.2lbs P/N 30365 MSRP $4,368.75
...Looks like non ambi bolt rel and safety
...Non dimpled non chrome lined barrel (.7lb heavier than ECC barrel) </div></div>

Now, what is it about the REPR you're interested in, exactly? Which features/configurations? The 16" and 20" barreled uppers will do everything that an SR-25 can do. A REPR won't say "KAC SR-25" on it but it'll do the same job just as well/accurately/efficiently, if not cleaner since it's a piston rifle, and will eb manufactured of the same/matching quality.

LWRC's in-house made NiCorr treated barrels kick ass also, and they're rated at twice the service life of a mil-spec/USGI issued barrel.

I own a REPR, but I'm not gonna be biased here or start a DI/Piston debate (I hate those.) If I had to pick a DI AR that fired 7.62 NATO/.308, I'd go with an SR-25 carbine.

Re: 7.62 Rifle Questions

I like the fact that it's piston-driven, although I own both DI and piston ARs in 5.56. I like the MagPul stock, and I like the accuracy claims I've been reading (although I know there are no guarantees). But on the other side of the coin, the SR-25 platform has seen military use, so it clearly has things going for it as well.

Re: 7.62 Rifle Questions

The REPR has (sort of) seen military use as well: The DEA's FAST teams have been using it and the LWRC M6A2 in Afghanistan. They've officially adopted both rifles.

Re: 7.62 Rifle Questions

In my opinion, if really focusing on the type of operation (gas vs piston), why not consider a 7.62 that is purpose built from the ground up as a piston gun? Just seems to me the piston AR style rifle is a workaround for a problem that hasnt really existed in several decades. The concept sure does sell a bunch of rifles out of fear that yours will fail at the wrong time.
