Well this is my first post here so if this has been asked by someone else then I'm sorry. Ok so I'm going to build a R700 in 7 mag, I'm planning on dropping it into a AICS stock for a 300 Win Mag as the clips will accept the 7 Mag round, I'm looking looking into a Shilen barrel, so my question is what barrel length/twist should i be looking at. I'm panning on shooting between 140gr-180gr hand-loaded bullets I've read the 26-28" is good length but i want every bit i can get out this bad boy, also I am panning on getting it threaded so i can attach a suppressor(because i can) and when I'm not using that i will have a muzzle brake on it, i wont lie i don't have much experience with long range shooting past 300-400 yards but i wanna start shooting much further. Weight is not a concern and this is gonna be a couple of years in building the barrel being last part of the build. Honestly I'm not planning on competing its just a toy...albeit a very expensive toy. Thank for any help guys.

Re: 7 Mag build

Which 7mm mag do you want? This will matter as to which bullet(s) you chose and how fast you can push them.

If you are planning to run the 180gr VLDs, I would go with a 1 in 8.5 or 8.

The length of the barrel will depend on the magnum you chose in order to get adequate powder burn. If you really don't care about weight and will be shooting your rifle only in supported positions, then go with 28" to 30". If you will be mostly using a suppressor or want more portability, you can go with 24".

I run a 7wsm, melonited 28", threaded for brake or suppressor, 1 in 8.5" with 180gr bergers VLD hunting bullets @ 2930fps. Less than 1/2 moa accuracy, good pass 1000yds.

Re: 7 Mag build

im planing on using a 7mm REM Mag and i will almost always shoot prone with a bipod,, possibly some long range hunting but mostly something to shoot with my friends .338 lapua and the supressor will just be an every now and then thing mostly gonna have a muzzle brake on it

Re: 7 Mag build

I just started my own 7mm RM build on a Savage action for a ELR hunting rifle. ordered a Shilen Select Match 28" long, 1-8" twist in Varmint contour, with the muzzle brake it will be just under 30". the 1-8" twist is to shoot the 180gr Berger VLD Hunting bullets, and will also work for the New 195gr VLD Berger is advertising. if you like the 168-180 VLD you will be safer with a 1-9 twist. slower if you are wanting the 140-150s. if you are wanting to keep up with a 338 you are going to want to stick with the 168-180gr range

Re: 7 Mag build

I had a 7mm Mag with a 1-9 twist Bartlein 5r barrel that shot the 168 and 180 bergers lights out. It was 25inches and I shot the 168's over 3000 FPS.

Re: 7 Mag build

I have a 7Mag built on a Savage 110 action with a Lilja 26" 1:9 4 groove barrel. It shoots the 180 Bergers at 3010 with a pretty easy load at about 3/8" at 100 yards, I haven't really worked the load yet, that was good enough for me. From a 200 yard zero it goes out to 1000 yards very easy.

Re: 7 Mag build

Unless u are shooting it from a box blind for deer the longer the better. The practical limit is about 28 plus break. However that can is gonna get way out there at that length. I run a 28 on my 280 ai match gun and I have no issues with it. Matter of fact I like it. Balances great and all that percussion from the break are a long ways in front of you. My opinion only YMMV
