7 WSM or 338 Edge LRH rifle?

Re: 7 WSM or 338 Edge LRH rifle?

I own a couple of 338Edge rifles and my vote is 7Mag/WSM.

Unless you regularly shoot ELR I see no upside in the .338s
The 338s are over twice as expensive to shot.
The 7mm's and 30mags make me look good and still give me an excuse to miss.

I prefer either of those to the big 338's, but that's just me.

Good luck with your choice!

Peace

I love the 7 wsm too. It is plenty of gun for long range shooting and hunting.
If you really have trouble choosing, try putting both the 7mm bullet you would shoot, and the 338 bullet data in a ballistic calculator and see how they compare with in the ranges you want to shoot and hunt.

Re: 7 WSM or 338 Edge LRH rifle?

I love my 7WSMs; I have shot them for at least 6 years, burning 3 barrels in the process. If you are just slinging lead from inside 1,800 yards on a routine basis, a 7WSM with 180-190 class bullets is very hard to beat. If you want to hunt something weighing 800-1,000 pounds at 1,000 yards, then the 338 is your ticket.

I shoot 338LM and 338LM Improved with 300 grain SMK and Lapua. Like them a lot. But the cost is nearly double that of the 7WSM, and in virtually every category my 7WSM out shoots (flatter trajectory) the 338 out to about 1,500-1,800 yards.

Jeff,
How many rounds on average where you getting out of those 3 barrels before you noticed a accuracy decrease? We're any of them melonited? I'm very curious about this. I love my 7wsm and may eventually move to that caliber for both hunting and matches.

I already own a .50BMG for my ELR needs. I was deadset on 338 edge or Lapua, until I researched the 7wsm then began to second guess my decision. I am really leaning towards the 7 now and just wanted know if there was any reason to stick with the edge.

I am also interested in barrel life, and are you running long or short action?

Re: 7 WSM or 338 Edge LRH rifle?

Pick one to do now, you know you'll do the other one eventually ... or that is how I'm doing it anyway. Starting with the 7WSM now and will build the Edge by the end of 2012 hopefully (McM A5 showed up today).

Re: 7 WSM or 338 Edge LRH rifle?

Barrel life. Let me preface this by saying I am not nice to my barrels. I shoot fast and frequently. It is not unusual for me to go through 50 7WSM rounds in an hour of just plinking steel at the range. To me barrels are consumables, just like bullets, powder, and brass. I have multiple chambered and threaded barrels in my garage and own all my reamers. So its no biggie to pull a burned out barrel and immediately thread the replacement right on.

I burned two barrels on my KMW short action Surgeon. One was a 26" short throat feed from a magazine (that one went roughly 1,850 rounds). It was used for a bit of 600 and 1,000 yard F-Class in Houston, but mainly I just shot the dog doo out of it. Meaning that I would run it at a rate of roughly a round every 30-40 seconds doing follow up drills and such.

The second barrel only went 1,685 rounds exactly before dying a horrible death in the middle on an F-Class 1,000 yard match. I won a bunch of F-Class matches with that Kreiger barrel. But F-Class is VERY hard on barrels. Meaning shoot 24 or 25 rounds in 17-18 minutes. Take a break for an hour then do it again and then again for a third time all in one day. Eats the throat for lunch. The new barrel on this rig is also a Kreiger 9 twist (roughly 500 rounds through it now).

The third barrel (a Bartlein) was on my dedicated F-Class rig. That one went close to 1,700 rounds. Again F-Class is brutal to barrels. The new barrel on this rig is also a Bartlein 9 twist (roughly 150 rounds through it now).

Re: 7 WSM or 338 Edge LRH rifle?

Jeff, Thanks. That's a lot of good info there. I'm doing the same thing as you in regards to owning the reamer and chambering multiple barrels at the same time, only difference is I'm going to try melonite to slow the throat erosion.. Hope it helps.

Re: 7 WSM or 338 Edge LRH rifle?

I had a 338 Edge and it was a hammer. I am now building a 7 SAUM.

I find that it will shoot about the same at distance. Out to about 1500 yards the 7 may very well be better.

It also depends on what your true motives are for the gun.

I ended up shooting my 338 hardly at all. I hope to take the 7 out a little more.

It will be about half the price to shoot as well.
