700 P or 700 XCR

Re: 700 P or 700 XCR

I have a 700 P win mag (before the make over) and a 700 XCR, so the comparison may not as apple to apple, but I think it's close enough. IMHO, the XCR is a bit more accurate out of the box. I like the trigger on the XCR better, although I think newer models of the 700 P has the same trigger system. Cost certainly is a big difference between the two. Depending on what you use it for, the 700 P may be adequate. With the extra money, you can put it toward the glass.

Re: 700 P or 700 XCR

Newer 700P's have the Xmark pro, XCR has the 40X trigger, I have owned both, the XCR is a nicer stick. Great trigger out of the box, and way sub MOA out of the box with BH and FGM ammo

Re: 700 P or 700 XCR

ace31,

My understanding:

700 P:
Chrome Moly Barrel and Action, Parkerized type finish
HS Precision Stock - Color Black w/Aluminum bedding block
Mark X Trigger (unless it's an older model)

700 XCR:
Stainless Barrel and Action, Black TriNyte® PVD coating
Bell & Carson Stock - Color Olive with black web w/Aluminum bedding block
40 X Trigger

So with the XCR you get coated stainless steel, and a much better trigger. The stocks are a wash, though I think the H-S Precision may be just a bit better.

Both will shoot well. I could not decide myself, so I bought both, a Rem XCR Compact in .223, and a Rem LTR in 308.

I am replacing the LTR's Mark X trigger with a Timney. The XCR's 40x Trigger is great as is.

Re: 700 P or 700 XCR

I would also look at the 5R. Longer barrel than the XCR and not as heavy as the 700P. Many have said it is the most accurate out of the box facotry gun out there. The FNs are a good rival however.

The X Mark pro trigger is made out to be a better trigger but is not. Look at something like a Timney or Jewell or a Basix trigger.

For me, the 700 P was slightly sub MOA, as opposed to the XCR was clearly between 0.5-0.75 MOA, although it was more like a .75 MOA than 0.5 MOA

Re: 700 P or 700 XCR

I don't mean to hijack the thread by getting slightly off topic, but it seems like you already have some great input that's directly related to your question (I have no real input myself other than to reassure you that any Remington 700 you choose will serve you very well - my personal choice was a 700 LTR).

With that out of the way, I just want to suggest to you that, whatever else you decide on, get yourself set up with a decent trigger (whether it's a trigger job, an aftermarket unit, etc.), and a rigid stock (HS Precision, Bell & Carlson Medalist, McMillan, Manners, AI, etc) - just something that won't bend (and shift your point of impact) when your shooting it off a bipod.

Then get the best glass you can afford.

After that, shoot as much as you can (seriously - go nuts). I just can't stress that enough. When you start doing that, the finer details of the equipment you choose will seem a whole lot less important (don't worry - you'll quickly find out if anything you're using doesn't work and then you can swap it out).

You'll learn more from one day at the range than you will from a month's worth of perusing these forums. Don't get me wrong; this place is a very, very good resource (and some guys here are wizards with a rifle and a wealth of knowledge). I'm simply stressing that there's just no substitute for experience behind the trigger.

(Stepping down from soap box now).

Good shooting to you, brother.

Re: 700 P or 700 XCR

If you can afford it get the XCR. And the same with the stock, scope and everything, do your homework and try to get good stuff so they can serve you several years specially if you are not a millonaire.

Re: 700 P or 700 XCR

XCR all the way or LTR as Bob made mention, its simply a more user friendly, better thought out, lighter, more accurate and especially sexier than the P, but I am little biased if you couldn't tell.

idsteve,

Right church, wrong pew. We are talking XCR Tacticals not Sporters. Like these:

XCR Tactical Compact

XCR Tactical LR

The Tacticals have the B&C Stocks, and 40x triggers....

Re: 700 P or 700 XCR

Accuracy goes by gun to gun. Some 700 P with shoot sub 1/2 moa. I have had a couple 1/2 inch groupings so far with my .308 and only have about 200 rounds threw it and its still getting better.

Re: 700 P or 700 XCR

I bought the XCR model before they switched to the new X-mark trigger. The only reason I spent the extra on the XCR versus the standard 700 was because I wanted the extra corrosion resistance as it rains a lot in the pacific north west. Just a thought.
