Thats why you single load them (80gr.SMK). I single load them with the "Original Bob sled" and they work well, Better than the 77gr. SMK for 1K shots. Dont know why you would use a .223 AR-15 to shoot out to 1K anyway. I just loaded some up for fun to try at that distance.

Re: 77 grain SMK at 1000 yards?

I just ran some 77SMK's out to 1000 today at reade. Loads were 24.7 varget, Win brass, with federal 205 primer. Shoots around .5-.6 MOA out to 300 and around .75 rest of the way out. My 600 yard group was 4.71" for 5 rounds. 800 yards were 6.17" for 5 rounds, and 1k was right at 10" for 5 rounds. Surprised me. The 24" RRA Varmint really shoots for the price!

Cause they are winning the Service Rifle 1000 yard events.

Now to change the subject a tad, I was shooting a match next to a gun who was using an AR (set up for match rilfe).

He was shooting 5&5 instead of the custom 3&8 in Rapid Fire. He cut the leading edge of his mags out so he could get the 77s seated a bit further out, they would fit through the mag well but not in the mags, so the 5 rounds were sticking out.

Anyone ever tried this. The dude swears it helps, judging by his scores he had something working.

Re: 77 grain SMK at 1000 yards?

I hope he wasn't doing 3 & 8 or he'd be screwing everryone in the pits up for hours....LOL.

I messed around with loading 223 long and having the mags cut at the front, but it didn't really gain me anything. My scores didn't change worth spit. If you aren't cleaning 300 rapid with mag length, you won't with them loaded long.

For 1000, I was shooting 90JLks and 80 SMKs. You shoot 1000 in slow fire anyway, why bother with the 77s when the 80s and 90s will clean their clock at distance? I cannot remember which AMU ahooter did it, but he cleaned 100 with the M16 back in 93 or 94 with a respectable x-count with the 90 JLKs. I had a Holliger WOP upper with a 1:6.5" PacNor that was an absolute HAMMER with either bullet and equally impressive with the 77.

I just meant to point out that if 77's will work if that's what the OP has. The 80's are a good bit better, though.

NukeMMC, I'm loading 77's for XTC but thought about shooting a local long range match with the same load. It looks like they will go sub-sonic aroud 875 yards. I'm a little too busy to work up a new load right now.
