7mm-08 and 140gr. TTSX?

Re: 7mm-08 and 140gr. TTSX?

Well I guess there isn't much 7mm-08 love in these forums, well from my calculations it seems 49.5-50gr. of RL-19 should give me great speed with the 140gr. TTSX as well as the 139gr. GMX.

Re: 7mm-08 and 140gr. TTSX?

Rusty,

I loaded up some 139gr IB using RL-17. Found a good node on the upper end around 49.0grs. Never got around testing speeds, 48.6,49.0, and 49.4 all hit same POI. I have no testing with rl-19.

Re: 7mm-08 and 140gr. TTSX?

Thanks, that seems to be a little to hot for monolithic bullets though, I'm looking at about 46-46.5gr. of RL-17 as the max with the 140gr. monolithic bullets. What you have there is what I'm seeing as the possible max for RL-19, which by the way, at 50gr. almost fills the case to the top.

Re: 7mm-08 and 140gr. TTSX?

That's true they do produce more pressure. However, using Barnes TSX with most calibers. I've really never had a problem switching between lead and tsx or ttsx monolithic bullets seated .050" off the lands. GMX and E-tips produce higher pressure and must be started at lower charges.

Is RL19/17 the only powders you plan on using? Varget, imr 4350,4064, and h4350 are great too.

Re: 7mm-08 and 140gr. TTSX?

Going by my reloading manuals, it seems the best velocity for the 7mm-08 with 140gr. rounds is 51gr. of RL-19, usually from my experience, monolithic bullets reach their max at around 1gr. below lead bullets, so it would seem to me that max for the TTSX would be 50gr. of RL-19 and 46.5gr. of RL-17.

These two powders are all I'm working with at the moment, though I do plan on getting some H4350 when the shop in my town stocks it and I can get some before they run out (usually runs out within two days of receiving the shipment here), nothing wrong with reloader powders here though, I live in Cali with mild temperature swings, so I don't really experience the negatives of temp sensitive powders, and reloader powders offer the best velocity and great accuracy.

Re: 7mm-08 and 140gr. TTSX?

Rusty: RL19 strikes me as too slow. Some report big velocity/pressure swings with RL19. Hogdon's reports 2-3 fps velocity increase per one degree temp increase. I ran into this problem with my 7mmRM loads.

Of the two mentioned, I'd start with RL17. In fact, I plan to test RL17 with both 140g Berger's and TTSX myself.

Re: 7mm-08 and 140gr. TTSX?

Ive used 19 and it has done very well so far, temp swings are far less than that at about .8fps/degree. Right now I have my 50gr. heavily compressed load with 140gr. TTSX and 139gr. GMX (both are nearly the same in pressure curve and muzzle velocity) that shoots out at 2770fps in 100f weather, which is just fine with me. When I run out of RL-19, I'll probably move to RL-17, since I don't like compressing the powder so much.

No info on RL-19, but I've been using 140 TSX with Win 760 for years. 48gr is about right and no pressure. Best of all it's sub 1/2 MOA in my wife's Savage.

I have 2 7-08's and my best loads with 140 TSX or TTSX and 140 bt is 43.5 imr-4064. My velocity is 2964 with one and 2890 with the other. Both are identical one just a faster barrel I guess. I could not match accuracy or velocity with Rl 15 or Rl 19. Give it a try

Rusty, what did you find with the Rl 17? I just picked up a box of these for my 7mm08 and need to make a hunting load. Thanks

And as for love for the 7mm08..... Some people are just a little slower than others ;).

Barnes told me over the phone the 120ttsx seems more appropriate for the 7-08 due to the extra velocity and more reliable expansion. Also these bullets don't have a problem penetrating. I dropped weight in every caliber when switching to barnes. Switched 243 100gr partition to 80gr TTSX. 6.5creed from 140 sst to 127gr LRX. 7rem mag from 168gr vld to 145gr LRX.

My 7mag, 140tsx Barnes max load of 64gr. Rl19, CCI lrm. got me 2930 in a 25" rem. 700.
Barnes 168 LRX was
58 gr. Max. Rl19, CCI lrm.
2588 fps. In a 25" rem. 700
Accuracy to follow.
