Gunsmithing 7mm-300 weatherby reamer who has one?

Re: 7mm-300 weatherby reamer who has one?

I have a good barrel that I want to get rethreaded/recut ect to a savage action. It is in 7mm-300 weaterby. I am thinkning If I keep it the same cal then I will only lose a couple of inches. It is 30 in long so I could lose a few inches and still be ok. I guess my next choice will be either 7mm ultra or 7wsm. Could I barrel it to a 7mm/338 lapua and put it on a savage action? Thanks

I'd stay where your at. If this is a caliber you like and will have from time to time it might not be a bad idea to purchase a reamer from PTG. Honestly, with current components we have, 7RSAUM is about as large as you need to go. Look at the .284 Shehane as well.

that has peaked my interest. once my 284 barrel starts crapping out, i may look into that one.

The only draw back to it is fire forming. Keep your current .284 as the FF barrel and punch it out. Thats what I did with an old 6BR barrel when I built my 6Dasher, one of the smartest things I ever did.

Re: 7mm-300 weatherby reamer who has one?

Well here is the long story. First I will start by saying I am no gunsmith. But someday when I get al of my other businesses in order I want to be. So I play around from time to time learning on my own and screwing up some stuff. Not intersted in opinions on this. It is my stuff and if I screw it up I understand. So I traded around and got this sako l61 chambered in 7 300 weatherby for a little of nothing. It is a 30 1.35 target rig from the 80s. I wanted a 20 moa base on it so I ordered a blank and proceded to tap the action b/c they have this funky rail for scope mounting. I screwed this thing up royaly. Got it drilled but tapping was different story. Broke three or four taps in the reciever before I gave up and put the old mounts back on. So I was gonna order a Mac a5 and bed it up and call it quits with the old bases. What I discovered today is that after I screwed up a year ago I had been shooting it some in the meantime and I have cracked the action. I was blasting it to cerokote it. And when the finish came off what did I find? A hairline crack in the front top next to where I drilled it. SO I unscrewed the barrel and chaulked that one up to about a 300$ lesson but now I have a barrel that shoots lights out. I have 280Ai with a 28in rock that is a complete hammer built by harold fred. I love the 284s. So a 284 Shehane would be about what I aready have. I also have a 7wsm so I really dont want that either. I also have a 30 weatherby that wieghs about 35 that will reach farther than I can. I would like to have another big 7, but I might should just do it in 7wswm to run the 189s and the 180s and cal it good. I wouldnt mind having a 7 338 lap. But if I have me way I would have another 7 300. Already have the dies. Thoughts?
