7mm and spotting your own hits

Re: 7mm and spotting your own hits

Need more info. Several factors will drive this. What cartridge are you shooting? Using a brake or can? Heavy or light rifle?

I have both a 7RM and a 7-08. Neither have a can or brake. The magnum weighs about 16# and I usually can start spotting impacts at 500yds and beyond. The 7-08 is about 13# and I can spot hits starting about 400yds. It really depends on your glass and how quickly you can recover from the recoil.

Of coarse, this all assumes you have a decent target or surrounding area that allows you see the impact. Tall grass bad. Open field good. Not sure what you were using before, but the 7's are really no different than the 30's as far as seeing impacts.

Re: 7mm and spotting your own hits

I'm really thinking about going with a 284, braked, and at least 14lbs, 22x nightforce, shooting 175-180gr bullets. Rifle will be used for primarily for LR matches where weight won't be a factor, but with that said, it might hang out in the deer blind a time or two.

I'm really only concerned with spotting hits on targets with an unobstructed field of view. I'm sure preloading the bipods is going to help, but will the combination be enough?

Re: 7mm and spotting your own hits

Are you talking about seeing the dirt fly or spotting bullet holes in paper? Or hits on steel plate? A rifle mounted scope or a spotting scope? Or are you talking about shooting and watching impact with your own scope on the rifle.

I like to at least see the dirt fly. I'm lucky enough to catch an occasional trace when I'm shooting my 6x47, but don't find it to be a necessity.
