I’m kind of new to barrel contour and everything but I own a savage 111 trophy hunter chambered in 7 mag. I’m getting another barrel and going for 28in and a 1:9 twist rate. Going to use the gun up to about 6-700 yards for deer and coyote hunting. Little help on which contour I should get to suit my application best. thanks in advance.

I will be using pre fitted savage barrels

Barrel info. Contour, barrel length, and twist rate are all dependant on the application. Store bought ammo, stick with normal 1-9 twist rate. Handloading for long range, twist rate vary. Length is dependent on velocity wanted, handling, and looks. Contour is dependent on handeling, ergonomic, and cooling from shot strings. A lot of people go for little light contours for hunting but then turn around and put long barrels on them. Personal I prefer big contours and short barrels. If its to heavy, loose weight or start working out. I just finished a sprush up job on a Remington for the same purpose. Standard ADL cut down to 22” new stock, bedding, and trigger. 140 gr Nosler Accubonds 2980 FPS and stacks them for 3 shot groups at 100. 5 shot groups open up due to pencil barrel. Supper light and handy, not my thing but he likes it. Just an example of a similar purpose rifle. Not the last work by any means. Hope this helps.
