Having problems reloading/sizing the brass.

I got 150 rds of brass from my dad shot out of his gun.
For my 308, 243, and 338 I've had no problems resizing the brass, and just turning in the die 1/3 of a turn to make them work perfect in my guns that were shot out of others guns.

For the 7mm I've turned the die in 3-4 full turns and they still will not fit and allow me to close the bolt.

I'm stumped and frustrated so any ideas?

Re: 7mm rem mag resizing

The area ahead of the belt will not allow complete resizing on those cases. You can get an aftermarket die which will resize them...it uses a collet to squeeze that area down. Someone on here can point you to it. It costs, however.

Re: 7mm rem mag resizing

My dad shot this morning so I used his brass to see if it would fit my chamber....of course it didn't. I guess my chamber is just a little tighter than his.

For now I'm just going to separate the brass from what's been fired in his gun and mine and use those to reload and just neck size.

Thanks for the info on belted cartridges and the link.

These 7mm's are our 2 main hunting guns so 150 rounds from his brass will last many years. And I'll still get a full year out of my 50ct of brass, if I don't eat them up developing a load haha

Just remember that neck only sized brass will need to be F/L sized at some point. I NEVER neck size for brass that will be used for hunting. Just isn't wise to take a chance on getting a stuck case in the chamber when you're out in the middle of nowhere.

If you're going to neck only for Dad's rifle, I would test chamber (in a safe area do do so) any ammo that will be used out in the field.

The proper way to F/L resize Dad's brass would be to use a shoulder bump gauge to measure Dad's brass and go from there even if you have to buy another die. Redding makes a body die in 7MM mag. for under $30.00. You could give that a try without spending a lot of money.

I did buy a Innovative Technologies collet die for belted magnums, but none of my 300 Mag brass has needed the the die yet.

Re: 7mm rem mag resizing

In any event, if you color a case with a sharpie and chamber the unprimed, unpowdered case in your chamber, the places where the sharpie ink is removed is where the case is tight.

If the case is tight at the base, the larrywillis device can be used to compress the web, other wise its generally a shoulder position issue.

Re: 7mm rem mag resizing

Yes I will be test fitting all the brass in both guns to make sure the bolt opens and closes smoothly before and after sizing and loading.

I'll end up buying that die eventually in that link but this will just get me started for now doing the load work up.

I'm actually more picky about loading for dads rifle, I'd feel bad if he got one stuck or that would chamber while we were out here hunting. If it happens to my rifle I only have one person to blame.

Everything has been good in my short reloading career so far, knock on wood.

Sizing cases is about shoulder set back. Also, dies and shell holders can be incompatible. Too long a die impinging on the shell holder will prevent sufficient sizing of the case base and shoulder set back. Shoulder set back should, generally, not be more than ten thousandths in any cartridge, chamber combination. Also, the die can be shore, buckling the case mouth such that it will not fit into the chamber.

Loading lots of 300WM, and 7WM rounds, I never experienced this issue.
