Anyone have any load data for this round using RL17 and Horn 162 Amax? From what I am finding, it looks like if I start working up rounds around 54 grains that I should be ok, but others experience would be helpful.

Thanks.

Re: 7mm RSAUM

sorry dude, have put a lot of rounds through mine, but none with RE17.
Ive used, retumbo, H1000, H4831sc, and IMR4350.
THe 4831 is what I landed on.

Re: 7mm RSAUM

I'm just crunching numbers and 54 looks to be a good starting place...but as always, search for data in more than one spot.

I use this for a comparison when I can't find book data.

300 WSM with RL17 and 180gr bullet has a book max at 66gr
300 SAUM with RL17 and 180 bullet has a book max at 63gr.

3 grain difference.

7mm WSM with RL17 and 160gr bullet has a book max at 60gr
it would seem logical then, that...
7mm SAUM with RL17 and 160gr bullet has a theoretical book max of about 57gr

I would say 57 is probably ok for a max...so your 54 should be just fine to start as well.

It looks like RL25 should get you to 3000fps without a problem as well, and there is book data for that at Alliant.

If the 300 SAUM can push 180's beyond 3000fps then I see no reason why the 162's can't do the same thing or faster in a 7mm SAUM

Re: 7mm RSAUM

cbass,

That seems like some reasonable logic. I'll work it up starting from 54 like I figured and go from there.

Thanks.

Please post your findings...I am almost done with the berger 180s and wnat to try 162s next...I was interested in RL 17 as well.

Thanks

Re: 7mm RSAUM

I run the 162's with 58.3 grains of RL-17, however, its a little to hot. I toasted the primer pockets in a couple of firings. My average velocity is 3060 out of a 25 in barrel.

Re: 7mm RSAUM

"RL 17 seems a little fast for that. Let us know how it works out for you".

Actually, for me RL-17 gave me more velocity with less powder than anything else. I tried H-1000, IMR-4831, H4831SC, H4350, IMR-4064, RL-22. I got to 3000 fps with 67.7 grains of H-1000 and I got to about 3080 with 4064. Every other powder hit pressure between 2900 and 2950. With RL-17 I actually got up to 3130 or so and had lower ES and SD numbers than any other powder. At 58.3 I've got single digit ES and SD numbers, however, like I said above I still think it is too hot.

Re: 7mm RSAUM

I'm tinkering with RL17. I started at 54 grs. and tested to 56 grs. with no pressure signs (24" factory barrel). Accuracy is good at 56 grs. and was good from 54 grs. I will test again soon creeping up from 56 grs. and see what happens. I also had good results with H4831 SC. Wish I knew the speeds but I don't own a chrono yet.

Re: 7mm RSAUM

Just to update, I did some load development yesterday. My final loads working up yesterday were at 57.5 gr of RL17. I was getting about 3020 fps with no signs of pressure at all. There was still a reasonable amount of room left in the case also. It looks like from the trend that I am seeing that I am coming into another node as the groups are getting tighter again. It looks like I will be able to hit the 3100 fps mark without much problem.
