i have been doing some research on building a new long range hunting rifle.

i have a 700 long action donor gun in 7mm rem mag.

i am thinking 7mm saum. thinking about a 25" barrel in a contour similar to remingtons varmint contour.

looking for a mcmillan a series stock.

i want a dbm but am not sure which one to go with for reliable feeding. will there be a problem feeding this short cartrige out of a long action.

is there any adjustments necessary to the feed lips or do you just run standard long action mags.

what countour of barrel do you have to order to flute the barrell. ive heard that it is caliber specific. for instance you have to have a 5 countour barrell in 7mm to flute it.

any help would be appreciated

Re: 7mm saum build

If you are going to do a 7mm on a long action, go with the WSM. That way you can seat the bullet way out in the neck, and you will get better speeds. Just make sure you have your gunsmith use the right reamer for the bullet you will shoot.
I got my first gun with a Mcmillan A3-5 stock and love it. I have held a few A5's but like the A3's. I would talk to the guy that your going to get the barrel from on fluting. I think you can flute any barrel.

Here is a picture of my gun. Hope this helps.

Re: 7mm saum build

Do you have an idea on who is going to make your barrel? Since you are already in Wa, I suggest coming over the hill to Benchmark Barrels out of Arlington/Smokey Point. Talk to Ron or Chris and they will answer all of your questions and then some!!

Re: 7mm saum build

Run any aics compatable dbm that you like and get the 338 lapua mags

they will feed the saum or wsm just fine.

I would do a 7mm-300wsm before i did a straight 7wsm but the 7saum is also a great choice

i would call Jered at APA and talk to him about the project
706-534-1577

he gets a guy that will chop down AICS mags, i would get one down for hunting for sure, those 5 round 338 AICS mags stick down a long ways

here is a pic of the chopped mag

good luck with the project

Re: 7mm saum build

I just went this route with a 7mm SAUM in a long action. Initially sent my Rem 700 BDL to the smith to blueprint and rebarrel, but chanded my mind and sent him a custom action instead. In this case a Stiller Tac 300. I purchased an instock Krieger 7mm fluted 5.5 contour barrel from Bruno's. This is the smallest barrel that Krieger will flute in 7mm. It is a 6 contour ahead of the chamber with a muzzle contour of the 5 to allow room for the flutes. (I think this is how it was explained to me. Apologies if I am incorrect).

I am still working on the DBM setup. To get my project up and running I purchased a PT&G steel tactical bottom metal, internal box, follower and spring. It will feed 2 out of the magazine fairly reliably, but with a 3rd in the magazine spring pressure is a bit too much and the round tries to jump out of the magazine. I am in the process of trying to get into a good DBM bottom metal setup for the AW 338 lapua magazines. (But they hang down a long ways below the stock for a hunting rifle).

Hope this helps. Feel free to PM me if you have any specific questions.
