Join contestI was thinking the 9 would be better just wasn’t sure. Probably not shoot anything heavier. Thinking the 175s would be about right. My 7Mag shoots 180VLD Hunts very well with a 1:9 and this twist rate works well for 2 good friends of mine as well.
Would 8 not be a little fast say if one wanted to shoot the 162 A max?i've been planning on doing a 7mm for some time now and don't plan to go any slower than an 8 twist, whether it's from a magnum or otherwise
It might be a little faster than needed, but with todays tighter tolerances, the tight twist doesn't matter as much as it used to. 162's stabilize just fine out of my 7mm-08 and accuracy is very good with them.Would 8 not be a little fast say if one wanted to shoot the 162 A max?
162 from short action 308 bolt face, 180 from mag bolt faceWould 8 not be a little fast say if one wanted to shoot the 162 A max?
assuming you're at 5k elevation yeah you'd probably be fine. but the 9 twist is slow for a 7mm. why limit yourself to high elevations or certain bullets when an 8 twist would get it done everywhere and better1:9 would be fine for the 175gr. I shoot a 1:8.7 twist and shoot 180gr Bergers.
How well do they do past the transonic range on a cold sea level day wth that twist? This is jut my opinion, but the only time I think you need faster than 1:9 is if you plan to shoot the Berger 195 eol bullets. I shoot Berger 180 vld hunters and 175 eld-x out of my 1:9 twist 280 ackley and they both perform great.
