I'm putting together a shopping list for GAP to build a "congrats your outta Iraq" rifle and would love to here your thoughts! Bought the scope (leupold mk4) and sent it to the custom shop to have the BDC put on but i'm stuck on the stick. $3400-ish is my cap.

Experience is more than welcomed!

Re: 7mm wsm...

Ditch the scope and get something better for starters.

There are so many options out there for you, you really need to decide on your own. There are no right or wrong answers. You are going to get a custom action; Templar, Badger, Surgeon, etc. You will get a custom stock; Manners, McMillan, AICS, etc. And then decide on barrel length and contour. The most important thing is getting what YOU want. Making sure the stock is comfortable and fits and the rifle fulfills the expectation you are going to use it for whether it be a hunting stick, a tactical comp application, or somewhere in between. Every person that can respond to this thread will give you different ideas and they all most likely will be somewhat correct leaving you undecided and confused.

So do a good bit of research, decide what your criterion and goal will be, and move forward.

So my goal was to get input from shooters and take that info and put it towards my research. I've been lookin up stuff online for months now. I just think it's time I got some perspective.

....or take a look around the for sale section because there has been a remarkable selection super nice rifles available as of late.

I'm gonna get a new, fresh rifle and see what I can do with it because I never owned one quite like what I want and well, I've worked hard for it so why not! lol

Re: 7mm wsm...

Don't let the fact that you have a Leupold on a military rifle lead you to believe it's a great piece of kit. The discussions about Leupold's issues have been debated ad nauseum. Suffice it to say that there are quite a few better choices to be made. Sure, it works, just like a standard 700P would work too. But you are buying a custom made rifle because you recognize the quality and differences that custom work provides. Take that same mind set and know that there are much better optics choices out there and you can get a scope that is well above Leupold's abilities.

Re: 7mm wsm...

I think they are just trying to say that there is better glass available. Nothing wrong with starting with a Leupy.

Are you dead set on GAP? Because there are a lot of good builders on here that don't take near as long as GAP or cost as much.

Re: 7mm wsm...

Seems like you are deadset on 7WSM, but you may want to think about .308 for ammo availibility etc.

I have a GAP .308 and GAP 7mm Mag. The 7mm heats up alot quicker so you can't shoot as quick as you might like. Also fouls alot more than the .308.

YOu can get a Nightforce 3.5-15 for around 1300 if you are patient and shop around.

As far as stocks go, try and shoot a few different ones. I have 2 AICS 2.0 and love the stock. It seems to be that people either love them or hate them, so you may want to try one out first.

And yeah I know there is better glass (us optics for instance) but financially a mediocre leup is gonna get me by for a bit. </div></div>

Have you taken a look at Kahles or Swarovski or Zeiss? SFFA has a samples page that is discounted items that lived in a display case for a ltitle while. Camera Land has the same thing. I just ordered a Zeiss for a hunting rifle I'm putting together and saved myself enough to buy a new stock.

I'm not dead set persay but I have a 308 and I love it. But i'm looking for something different. I've looked into availability of the bullets and there out there to get. And I really like the things I here about these rounds.

Re: 7mm wsm...

what exactly is your goal for this rifle? that will help pick components. is it going to be a prone only rifle dedicated to long range, a multipurpose rifle that will be used offhand and prone, or a hunting rifle that will need to be carried long distances?

So this will be a multi purpose rifle that will hopefully be shot every way imaginable, I like the 800yd-1kyds, it's fun to compete against your shootin partner, and really see what you can do! I love to compete as well in shoots but never have with a bolt gun so hopefully i'll get the chance!

Re: 7mm wsm...

Here is my 7WSM build list, APA did the work and I should have it in a week or two. Hope this helps

Surgeon RSR WSM action w/ Surgeon 20 moa rail
Mike Rock 28" fluted MTU barrel, 1/8.7 twist
McMillan A5 stock
Seekins WSM DBM
Timney trigger set at 1#
Badger Thruster brake

I would recommend you send your build to APA, you will have your rifle done much faster than if you went with GAP. And everyone here will tell you that Jered and crew build one hell of a stick.
