Started messing around with some R17 in my 7mm08 today with 175 smk's. Started at 43 and worked up, 46gr clocked an average of 2755. Only shot at 100 but things look promising. Barrel is a 22" broughton. With a g7 bc of 0.327 it shows long range potential.

I had been running varget but could only get to 2620 before hitting pressure.

More to come later.

Re: 7mm08,175smk and R17

Be interested to see how this comes together. Building a 7-80 myself with a Rock 22" barrel.

Re: 7mm08,175smk and R17

Something I thought about long and hard after shooting the .308 210's and RL 17 combo. It really opens some new territory.

Re: 7mm08,175smk and R17

Yep, aics mags. oal is 2.835, it's mildly compressed.

Re: 7mm08,175smk and R17

Good stuff. It seems the RL17 is better suited for pushing heavy bullets when you're dealing with small case capacity.

That's good to hear!!!I was thinking of doing 708AI and using R-17 with 180's.My estimate of 2750-2800fps should be doable then.

Thanks,

Steve

Re: 7mm08,175smk and R17

Just think of shooting the 168 Berger at ???? velo. If you could get 2800+ with that combo, it's pretty tough to beat. Unless you do the 260 and 140 combo at 3000. To many choices.

Re: 7mm08,175smk and R17

Im running the 168VLDs in my 7mm08 @2711 FPS via 22" Broughton. Im using H4350 and am getting excellent accuracy. I did get up to 2800+ with RL17 but accuracy wasnt very good. May tinker more with '17 someday, but the 2700+ FPS mark is more that good enough for long range steel, and killing critters.

According to jbm the 168's would need to be a full 75fps faster to equal the foot pounds and the wind drift of the 175's. They would be flatter though.

I run a can on my rifles so in my opinion a 22" barrel is about all I want, otherwise they get too nose heavy. With this combo it looks like a 7mm08 is going to be hard to beat. Performance vs barrel length vs powder charge.

Should have some long range data after the weekend.

Re: 7mm08,175smk and R17

Try the Berger 180s then. I can push the 168 Bergers considerably faster than the 175 smks in my wsm. More than the 8 gr difference would seem to make.

Re: 7mm08,175smk and R17

So RL17 is the go to if you are reaching pressure signs with Varget and need a touch more velocity in the 7-08? Or does that only hold true for the heavy’s (160+)?
I would like to push my 140 VLD'S another 50 fps but I am showing pressure signs....Now at 2850 w/ 43.4 grs Varget.

Hope I'm not high-jacking your thread.

Re: 7mm08,175smk and R17

I've never run 140's, the R17 may be worth a try.

Re: 7mm08,175smk and R17

Shot a fair bit this weekend. 3.1 at 550, 6.7 at 910, 7.4 mil at 975. 13.5 at 1390. Load seemed to be consistent. Only shot steel. I'm really starting to like this chambering.

Re: 7mm08,175smk and R17

lapua brass
wolf mag primer
46gr R17
175smk at 2.835
2755fps

Re: 7mm08,175smk and R17

That sounds great! What altitude are you at? Looks like you are supersonic to past 1500.

I'm definitely getting one of these.

Re: 7mm08,175smk and R17

I've got some playing to do yet with mine, hoping the 162 AMax's will pan out (I'll be happy if I can get 2650-2700 with I4895).

Anyone know the G7 of the Amx's?

(not looking to hijack-its just tough finding enough folks in one place paying attention to the 7-08 stuff

.307 is the average for all velocities. It goes up to .310 if you are over 3000fps.

Re: 7mm08,175smk and R17

Makes the 7-08 with 22" barrel come close to a .260 shooting 140's with 24-26" barrel...but still not beat it. Curious what you guys will get with the 7-08, RL17, and a longer barrel.

What kind of velocity are you figuring? JBM says that a 139 Scenar moving at 2900fps is here:

Looks to me it very close in drop and beats the 260 in the wind. Also, from the little bit I looked around you'd need at least a 26" barrel to get 2900 out of a 139 Scenar.

Please explain.

Re: 7mm08,175smk and R17

Put the Sierra 7mm 175smk(Litz) into JBM at any velocity and then do the .264 JLK 140VLD(Litz) at the same speed. They will show up the exact same.

With a .260 you can get up to 2850fps.

So you are going to need a longer barrel to match the .260 with a 26" barrel.

They will probably run even at each barrel length, but the 7mm does have the edge in wounding capability...the .260's edge is lower recoil and lower cost.

Re: 7mm08,175smk and R17

I agree with the lower recoil but the cost difference should be very small.

With the 7-08 you get a smaller package and better killing power. All of that equals a better hunting or tactical rig.

I shoot a 30-06 (w/ 220 and 240smk's at 2700 and 2600) right now so the stiffer recoil of the 7-08 will be welcome.

Re: 7mm08,175smk and R17

I would have to disagree with the lower cost of the 260, price out your 140jlk's, they are a fair bit more than 175 smk's, just bought a bunch of the 175's at 28.50/100. Brass, powder, primers are going to be equal, barrel life goes to the 7-08. Retained energy goes to the 7-08 as well.

Re: 7mm08,175smk and R17

I agree with you guys...I was thinking JLK 6.5 vs JLK 7mm for prices.

I have been looking at them both a lot to see what I want to make out of a Savage 308.

It is amazing the greater diameter of the 7mm allows similar velocities even though there is a 35gr. weight difference.

I am curious about the 162 A-Max with RL17 out of a 26" barrel, also the difference in barrel life between .260 and 7-08. Before this thread I was thinking the the 7-08 would be doing 2700fps max with the 175SMK out of a 26" barrel.

Thank you for sharing your information.

Re: 7mm08,175smk and R17

I only ran around 10 rounds over the chrony, one round opened up the es to 14, on steel at a distance the vertical seemed minimal.
