Anybody tried spinning up a short/shorter barreled 7mm08? I am thinking something in the 20-22" range. If you have tried one, please post up your thoughts/results. TIA.

Re: 7mm08, How short can you go?

Not sure what distance or load you plan on using it for, but Remington's model 7 has a 20 inch barrel and my brother happens to have one in 7mm-08 so I would say it'll work just fine. Good Luck.

Re: 7mm08, How short can you go?

The load will need to be worked with, but I am a big fan of the 162 Amax. I presently shoot them at 2925 out of a 22.5" barreled 7wsm, with great success. Have shot it out past 1200. The 7 08 will need to perform to 1200 or so as well.

Although I LOVE my 7wsm, I'd be willing to give up 150 fps, the loud brake, burnt barrel and the bigger/heavier cartridges if I can see 2775fps from the 7 08.

Re: 7mm08, How short can you go?

2775 from a 7-08 with a 22" barrel is going to be tough I think. I see a lot of guys pushing the 162's in the 27's using RL17 but they're doing it with 24-26" barrels.

That is my fast reaction as well--but I heard the same thing about 2900fps when I was planning my shorty 7wsm. Everybody said it could not be done, with the exception of the ONE guy who had actually built one. 1028 rds later, mine is going strong--67 grains of 4831 at a time!!!

Bohem, I am not arguing with your thoughts--in fact, I agree with them. I am just looking for the one guy who took the leap before me. Thanks. (BTW, where in Phila?)

Re: 7mm08, How short can you go?

Eric,

My buddy Joe or .257 has a 24in 7-08Ackley

i would think 2700 fps would be do able not sure about 2800

shoot him a pm he did a bunch of load work just playing around forming cases and pushed the 168's pretty fast out of the std 7-08 case

he has mainly been shooting the 168 vld's but is going to try some 162's now

i know brock has one and he shoots the 162's in his, Joe has his load data as well

Re: 7mm08, How short can you go?

Thanks B-

Brock has one....Gee what a coincidence...

That is reassuring as you might guess which venue I need it to shoot back to 1200.

I'll shoot Joe a PM.

Re: 7mm08, How short can you go?

eric

have you thought about a 260?

you should be able to pretty easily push a 140g VLD .612 b/c at 2800fps out of a 24in barrel

while not super short, probably still about the same lenght as your 7wsm with the brake

running the numbers in JBM

you are only loosing 3in of wind drift vs your current 162g 7wsm load at 1,000yds

at 1,200yards your 7wsm is going to be a mil flatter but your only giving up 4.6inch of wind drift

i personally made the switch from a 7wsm to a 260, i am happy with the results, i shoot about 20g less powder, no muzzle brake, shoots super soft and i had no issues what so ever spotting misses at ASC with the 140g bullet

its a great little round just something to consider if you havent already

West Chester, PA actually. Hit me up in a PM if you want to get together. I'd love to see 2750-2800 out of a shorty 7-08 if you go that route, that'd be pretty cool if it was possible.

Re: 7mm08, How short can you go?

I have considered a .260--and I have a lightweight .243 that shoots dtacs into tiny tiny little groups--but I tend to need a big puff of dust when I shoot my first shot so I can make the second!

You are correct, my wsm is 24" with the brake.

Re: 7mm08, How short can you go?

I do 2725ish out of 24", but that's loaded longer than comfy in an unaltered AICS mag (fits in Alpha mags).

If you aren't taking advantage of the higher BC bullers you might as well be shooting a 308 or a 260.

Personally I'd rather run 4 more inches of barrel and shoot with the 6.5's at 1K than have a shorty that is hind tit to a 308.
But short boltguns are all the rage, so I understand....

Re: 7mm08, How short can you go?

Hey Sobr- that's the idea. A 162 at 2775 is hind tit to very little.

Re: 7mm08, How short can you go?

6.5's are nice, but the 7-08 has a little more smackdown when it arrives....

My next barrel will probably be a zippy Bartlein at 24-26" to take full advantage. I think 162's at 2800fps would spoil me, and would be all I'd need in a SA non magnum.

I've ran a 26" boltgun for long enough that I'm used to it.

Re: 7mm08, How short can you go?

I have a Broughton 28" coming that I am going to build a 284 out of. I plan on making it a single shot and shooting the 162 to 168s. If what I read on them is true it should be a hammer.

Re: 7mm08, How short can you go?

eric

I just built a 24" 9tw and mine pushes the 162 2750fps with 47.8gr h4350 no pressure signs but it is out of a aw mag with coal of 2.93ish. it is great round that is overlooked alot. you can give me a call if you want to chat about it more.

Scott- She looks great. Kinda funny how we have taken a parallel course since that first IOR!!

I'll be in touch.

Re: 7mm08, How short can you go?

I haven't done much load developement, but I was able to get 2680 with my 18" 1-9 Krieger 7mm-08. It weighs 9.7Lbs as you see it, and is very handy.

IMG_20100916_182015.jpg

Load was 41.5gr RL-15 with lapua brass and 162 AMAX seated all the way out in an Alpha mag. With a different powder I am hoping to break 2700.

Re: 7mm08, How short can you go?

I get 2700 with the 162s in my 7mm08 with 22" tube. The more I shoot the 7mm08, the more I farkin love the chambering.

Re: 7mm08, How short can you go?

Is 16.25" considered short I know its not a bolt gun but still a not a pistol? I havent chrono'd the load yet but it loves 120gr TSX's over 44grs of Varget.

What are the specs of your rig? Between Fbomb at 18" and you at 22" looks like I can get close to what I am looking for. Looking forward to hearing the results of your addition development.

Re: 7mm08, How short can you go?

LSR did all action and bbl work. I did all the stock work.

1/9 twist 22" Broughton 5c bbl.
Badger 20MOA rail
Badger USMC rings
NXS F1 Mil/Mil
Old Style McM A4
Badger M5 DBM

The rifle has changed a little since the pic(to the above specs), but you get the idea.

Re: 7mm08, How short can you go?

Duct tape is not an effective way to have a barrel chambered. At least not yet.

Re: 7mm08, How short can you go?

So is a 20" doable to 600yds MAX with 120's to 162's? Is 9 twist going to be able to shoot 120's up to 162's? Hunting and plinking rig. No competitions and no 1000yd range.

shit if you are only going to 600yds you could go as short as 16" and you would be fine. i think 20" is a better length though. 9 twist will be fine to stabilize up to the 162's.

Re: 7mm08, How short can you go?

Not in 7mm-08 but I just finished a project rifle at 20" in a .260 She really shows promise. Accurate, nible and light. Didn't really loose much in speed either. If you are thinking about it go for it, I think you will like it.

Re: 7mm08, How short can you go?

If I get my damn rem700 gone without giving it away I plan on going the 20" route with 1-9 and hope for the best. Im just a ant on the ground compared to most shooters here. So it will be MORE then enough for what I will do with it.

Re: 7mm08, How short can you go?

I'm using a 22" fluted barrel on my PGM with a PGM suppresor, sierra 1915 bullets at 2800feet/s
5 shots at 650 yards with lot of wind and sun 3 in the target which is 10 inches high
