Trying to decide between one of these for another build. First which is better to have as a long range rifle?

As I see it the 300wsm pushes the lower BC .30 bullets faster than the high BC 7s which are not as fast. I've read bad things about the .300winmag for brass and piss poor barrel life so it's out. I'm thinking the 300wsm will provide better barrel life but not sure about brass. Looking for someone to weight in on this one too. How does the barrel life and brass life of the 7wsm weigh in compared to the 300wsm?

Which do you shoot and why?

Re: 7WSM or 300WSM brass and barrel life

I shoot 7WSM.
Gap with Broughton 1 in 9 twist. I push 180 Berger VLDs at over 2900 at exceptional accuracy. I bought it used two years ago and had no idea of round count. I have put around 500 thru it and still shoots great.
I think some folks are taking 300 WSM and necking to 7MM, as the neck is longer. But this time of night, I may be incorrect.
IMHO, I would choose 300 Win Mag over 300 WSM just because of its longevity.
Never be married to a barrel. They are like fine cigars and will have to be burned down some time.

I dont actually own one yet but my next build is intended to be a 7mmRSAUM... initially did plan on the 7mmWSM but after speaking to a few smiths and reading up a lot it appears the RSUAM cases are far more efficient than the WSM cases. The RSAUM uses far less powder to acheive similar velocities.

Im chosing the 7mm because it just has better projectiles available compared to 30 cal... period.

Im not concered about the speed as much as I am a significant difference in ballistic advantage and thats on thing the 7mm mags offer over the 30 cal mags.

Many matches have been won using the 7mm magnums and many a beast has been dropped also. Its a fair contender and in my eyes beats the 300wsm.

Winchester brass. I got a bit with the rifle and found a good deal on a few more bags. I have five firings on one box of brass and still OK.
I asked Jared at APA about how often he anneals 7 WSM brass. He said he doesn't because it doesn't last long enough to need to do it.

300 WSM is about halfway between 300WM and 30-06 for capacity, performance and barrel life. 5k rounds would be very good.

7 WSM is going to be half that approximately.

The 7/300 WSM is AKA the 7 BAT. I have built 1 so far and I have all the parts to build a second shortly. It has a longer neck than the 7 WSM case by about 0.040"

Barrel life is improved with minimal loss to muzzle velocity
