7WSM

Re: 7WSM

Yes Fed is worse than Win. I too hate Win cases, but after they go through my case prep, they are as good (if not better) than Norma. If you feel like fireforming cases, buy some Norma 300WSM brass, full length size it with 7WSM die, turn the necks and fireform them to 7WSM. Otherwise, do the following to WIN cases to produce some very accurate ammo

Uniform primer pocket
Deburr flash hole
Expande necks with K&M neck expanding mandrel
Neck turn to uniform necks
Neck size
Trim
Load

Thats what I do to new Win brass and it produces very accurate loads. But I have yet to find a cure for the primer pockets streching out kinda fast. Wish I had a primer pocket crimping tool!

Re: 7WSM

Bac, yes. Im already starting to notice loose pockets, loose enough that I feel very little pressure when seating some of the primers. Its not all of them, but maybe 10-15 out of 100 cases are showing this.

Win has never been known for uniform primer pocket dimensions, so they could have started out a bit loose from the srart.

Re: 7WSM

It is hit or miss I guess. My friends 300 WSM cases had really bad case rims from the factory. So bad, that the extractor couldn't grab ahold of the case.

Re: 7WSM

Guess so. One thing I dont get is, Norma makes 270WSM and 300WSM brass, so why not make 7WSM also? Norma makes very nice brass, but I dont feel like fire forming.

Re: 7WSM

There was a thread on here awhile back that was saying necking down a 300wsm or necking up a 270 is not the same as a 7wsm. They stated the cases are a little different. I will stick with the win until norma comes out with brass for it. Thanks for the info guys I do appreciate it.

I have looked into this as well and as far as I'm aware you can't fire-form either 270 WSM or 300 WSM brass into 7 WSM, something to do with the shoulder angle? you can of course use either 270 WSM brass or 300 to make a 7/270 WSM or 7/300 WSM.

I would certainly like to know anything to the contrary? as Win 7 WSM brass here in the UK is as rare as rocking horse poo.

From looking at case dimensions I came to the conclusion that the shoulder was blown forward by about 30 or 40 thou on the 7 WSM.

The 270 and 300 share everything but bullet diameter, the 7 is the odd ball. You can neck 270 up to 300 then run it into the 7mm die and leave a false shoulder on it and fireform it to get it to headspace during fireforming.

Or you can start with 300 brass and just neck it back and leave the false shoulder on the neck for the same reason.

When you get around to burning out that barrel, you might consider going to a 7/300 (7/270) to get the longer neck out of it. It will help with accuracy and bore life.

Also, so you're not spending a good portion of your barrel life by fireforming brass, you can use the bullseye and cream of wheat method to blast away and get the cases to fireform.

And the analogy to rocking horse poo cracked me up...
