I am considering a new build. Any thoughts on 7x57?
It seams like it would fit a long action nicely with room to seat the long bullets.

Is there a reason why it isn't more common? I believe the 6.5x55 has a taper to the case that has minor issues with pushing higher pressures.

I believe that I read the 6mm rem is based on the case.

What is the good/bad/and ugly of the round?

I like the ol' 7x57, its been around for a very long time. Some will say the 7mm-08 is more efficient, but a 7x57 pushing a 139 sst or 162 amax will put a hurting on deer sized game. I have custom Mausers chambered in 7x57 and they are fun rifles. Low recoil and very flat shooting.

Remington made them for a while and you can still pick up some Ruger 77 or interarms/Parker Hales on GB. Nosler still makes their custom grade rifle in 7x57, but If I went modern would probably rebarrel a Rem700 LA donor in 7x57.

Added:

Here is a side by side of 30-06 with 155 scenar, 7x57 with 120 sierra, and 308 with 175 smk. As stated below, with a long action you have some wiggle room to seat some bullets out and still be in mag length. Some may just opt for a 280 or 280AI if going with a long action. The 7x57 is a rifle the whole family can shoot.

The 7x57 is a fine cartridge but requires an intermediate or long action. Loaded to modern pressures, it will out perform the 7mm-08 with heavy bullets. I suppose why it's not as popular is most shooters going to a long action generally go to something even bigger, just because they can; just like with engines in our cars.....

Properly setup, the 7x57 would give up nothing to the other .473" boltface cartridges. Though would necessitate reloading, as factory ammo is loaded very mild.

BTW the 6mm Remington is actually based on the .257Roberts, which is based on the 7x57.
