A beginner's question

I'd need a few ideas/opinions from you folks who know rifles and scopes as I'm writing a novel in which there is a character who is basically a sniper and I need to write in some gear.

What would be a decent basic rifle? By basic I mean a rifle that doesn't take much tweaking to work reliably and accurately, is readily available in, say, USA and western Europe etc.

So far I've thought about a Remington 700 SPS or a CZ 550 Varmint Kevlar. Both in .308Win.

Would those do the trick for a sniper?

What about scopes? I realize this is the "rifle room" but maybe it's better to put both questions into the same thread.

What would be a good, all-around scope but mostly used for "longer" distances such as 200-400 yards? Would a Zeiss Classic Diavari 3-12x56 do the trick? How about a Leupold VX-3L 4.5-14x56?

Are there any particulars about sniping/long distance-hunting I should take into consideration? I'm just starting to read Cold Zero (Chris Whitcomb's autobiography), hopefully find some info in there as well but I don't like relying on just one source (since personal taste probably affects gear choice etc).

Thanks in advance!

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, I just noticed a myriad of threads answering these questions. Sorry about the hasty post.
