My guess is he was after the girls. He had a history of inappropriate behavior with young girls and had been fired for it. Mom ran away with the kids and hid them while he was attacking Dad. Then she came back to try and help her husband and he killed her too. If she hadn't hidden the girls, I'd bet everything he would have taken them because I think that was his motive.
Bad tactics though allowing him to take them one at a time. Don't give up an advantage.

My guess is the couple threw a cigarette butt down in the park and he got mad and stabbed them both when they wouldn't pick it up. The girls were left alone because they weren't smoking. He did have a history of favoritism with students, probably the ones that didn't smoke.
