And recommendations would be very helpful...thanks

Need it for load development tired of borrowing a friends...his is one that isn't made anymore so can't copy what he has.

Thanks

Re: A Good Chrono

Hey Buddy- Try out my CED next time we shoot and I think you will find it is about as good as you can get short of tracking down an Oehler 35.

Re: A Good Chrono

Chrony is probably as good as any. I have used pact, and competition electronics, they are ok. I do like the remote control and printer on the chrony, and they aren't real pricey.

Re: A Good Chrono

I have a Chrony, and its junk. Readings are all over the place. Then sometimes it would read consistent, and then just start spitting velocities that were 800 over the others! It was reading my 308 at 3600 FPS. Maybe I got a crap one.

I was saving for an Oehler when my buddy picked up a Pro Chrono. Its awesome! Only like $95 too.

Re: A Good Chrono

I had a Chrony I bought maybe 20 years ago. It worked fairly well until it jumped out in front of a pistol round one day. I got another Chrony but it gives me too many error messages. I have a friend or two with the same problems - or they just quit altogether.

I picked up a ProChrono but haven't used it long enough to get a good feel for its reliability under various lighting conditions. I got the remote control so I wouldn't have to walk out in front of the bench to change strings, etc, but that drove the total costs to $200.

I'd love to have an Oehler, but there are so many other things I can get for that $600. Maybe one of these days. Pact has several models depending on what you want to spend, but I'm not familiar with these.

Re: A Good Chrono

I've got a CED2 which I purchased for 200 bucks. Readings are consistent and works on overcast days.

The software and cables it comes with allows you to quickly export the data to excel and it already figures in the standard deviation, average, and min/max. My only gripe about it is the obvious cheap Chinese construction, but I haven't had any problems with it structurally and it gets the job done.

Re: A Good Chrono

The Oehlers are excellent. I have a 35. I have no need for the printer on the 35P and I wanted to save a little money

Been using mine for years now and it's always worked great.

Re: A Good Chrono

+1 for Oehler 35P. I bought one last year when they started making new ones. Works great. This is my 3rd chrono and to me it is a huge improvement. Very consistent readings and no errors. Also Johndoe here on the Hide makes custom frame for it in either 4' or 2' lengths. I have the 4' one. Very well made, definitely recommend it.

Re: A Good Chrono

Don't get the RCBS one - it has a history of being borked. Mine doesn't work at all anymore. When I thought of replacing it at the store a guy I trust walked over and said "don't get that one - the break all the time." Orlly?

I replaced it with the Chrony one that has worked good.

Re: A Good Chrono

The best cheap chrono is the $120 CE ProChrono Digital.

For a $200 budget, the CED M2 is about the only choice. For another $100 you can get an add-on IR light source that eliminates most if not all errors.

If you want to go hog wild, buy a Kurzzeit PVM-21. They're $175 more than the Oehler but the Oehler doesn't have a built-in IR light source, no IR remote control (no wires strung across the firing line) and is nowhere near the PITA to haul around.

Re: A Good Chrono

My plan is to get a CED M2 then add-on the IR light source later down the road. Seems to be the best economically choice to get a reliable piece of precision gear.

I broke three in the span of three months. Before the factory sent out the fourth one, I bought a CED. I keep the fourth SC as a back-up but -- Allah be praised -- I haven't needed it because the CED has been flawless.

Good luck finding one. Midway shows them Out of Stock, Backorder Okay. Rumor has it they've suspended production due to the economy. About a year ago, shooters were posting they couldn't get busted their PACTs repaired because the company had run out of spare components (with no further explanation). But apparently they were saving the parts to keep the production line open. Now even that appears to have run out.

Man, if you were getting 3600 FPS out of a 308, I'd say you have a GREAT one.

Yeah, I know, you meant the chrono.

I have a Chrony - it sucks. Like somebody else said, I got readings all over the place.

Re: A Good Chrono

I too have a chrony and it sucks. Nothing worse than trying to get load data from something all over the place. I purchase the chrony beta because it was the most expensive of the chronys and it sucks.

I bit the bullet and purchase Oehler 35P; haven't looked back. I would highly recommend this product to anyone needing a chrono.
