I could use a little scope guidance__
Background info_
I bought a Ruger Precision Rimfire a short while back to play with at a cheaper operating cost to my center fire Precision rifles. (still getting it settled in but it’s getting there)
To get the RPRR shooting and evaluated I stole the NightForce scope off of one of my center fire rifles to get it up and shooting.
I need to get the NF scope back on it’s original gun so am now needing to find a decent (moderately priced) scope for the RPRR.
Been doing a ‘lot' of research on moderately priced 6-24 /4.5-27 scopes and keep coming back to the Athlon Midas TAC 6-24×50 APRS3. (seems like a lot of shooters like that scope for a lower/moderately priced scope)
Unfortunately I have no way of actually looking through one as there are none at any shops near me.
My one nagging question on the APRS3 reticle involves that small stand-alone center dot. It looks good at first glance but my fear is that it will get lost on dark background targets or black target dots. (I have always used a cross in the center but I go way back to when scopes actually used crossed ‘hairs' in them)
I do like (I think) the cross in the center of the Ares BTR 4.5-27×50 APLR3 FFP IR MIL better but have no need (or want) for a lighted reticle and the farther 25 yard focus on this scope is not as appealing as the 10 yard focus on the Athlon Midas TAC 6-24×50.
Any thoughts from the actual users of both the above mentioned scopes?
Anybody compared the above mentions scopes side by side or for clarity/glass quality?
Anything that I am missing or should be thinking about?
Any thoughts on how the glass quality compares between the Athlon Midas TAC 6-24×50 APRS3 and the Ares BTR 4.5-27×50 APLR3 FFP IR MIL.
I’m not totally stuck on the Athlon brand but it does seem to have a lot going for the entry price.
Not even sure yet what I am going to do with the RPRR but mainly long range (for a .22 anyhow) possibly out to 400+ yards on paper, some 50-100 yard rodent control, and maybe try some local .22 precision matches.
