So, rather than piece together a cleaning kit for my AW, I bought Accuracy International's kit. It's produced by Parker Hale. It includes a Parker Hale 1 piece rod, a plastic bore guide, a bronze brush, a patch jag, what appears to be a makeup brush, a bottle of CLP, and a set of metric hex wrenches.

So, here are my observations- I bought my rifle with 120 rounds through it, I have put another 320 since then, with only a bore-snake run between sessions, and cleaning and re-lubing the bolt every other range session or so. I figured I should give it a cleaning, just so I know for sure that it has been done, and because the rifle was still very new when I bought it. I plan on cleaning it every 500-1000 rounds in the future (following the same bore-snake protocol, and cleaning the bolt ever 100 rounds or so.)

My observations are this- the bore guide is molded to match the reciever perfectly, but does not have the same fit or feel as a Lucas. Furthermore, the rod has a lot more "play" in the guide than a Dewey would in a proper fitting Lucas guide.

The brush is very tight and very stiff- so a patch can't fit on it and go through the bore. I found this out the hard way. I applied a patch with Iosso paste, and tried to run it through. I jammed it and almost wasn't able to get it back out. Half that is my own retardation- I shouldn't have tried to "make it go" so hard.

The patch jag is of a somewhat nonstandard design. It looks like it is meant to have the patch wrapped around it, but again, it won't fit through the bore like that.

Finally- this makes this setup rather non practical: the cleaning rod has a large MALE attachment at the end. The brush and jag both have matching female attachments. This is all well and good, but all standard rods are a smaller female end, and this will make replacing the brush much more difficult when the time comes.

All in all, I guess I would recommend piecing together a kit from quality components, rather than buying this one.

I'm not sure which patches you're using, but it's possible that they were too large for use with that jag...you might try using different patches. Others here can probably elaborate further on their own cleaning styles.

Dewey makes a variety of jags for the Parker Hale rods with male threads (along with a large selection of male-threaded rods themselves), and also sells an adapter (part LGPH) for $3.25 that converts the PH rod to accept 8/32 brushes...another part to buy, but you only need it once, and it's cheap:

I understand the feelings. The components in the kit are of proven quality, and factory-recommended, but may not be an ideal solution for every shooter. Ultimately everyone winds up developing their own preferred cleaning methodology, and the only way to get there is to try different products and techniques, and see what works for your weapons and yourself.

Jonathan-

I was using the supplied patches. I was able to make them work after cutting them, but only when I punched a hole in the middle and "threaded" it onto the end of the jag. The jag appears that it was designed to have a patch wrapped around it, but I couldn't get it to go.

As for the dewey attachments, that is really good to know! I figured I could look you up for Parker Hale brushes and such, but it is good to have options.

Re: A quick review on AI's cleaning kit for AE and AW

When I got my first AI rifle (AW) it was new and I followed the recommened barrel break in schedule that was on a page from Tacpro with the rifle. Lots and lots of tedious cleaning especially the first 30 rounds where it was 1 shot , clean then after 10 rounds 2 shots, clean etc. I got the full AI cleaning setup but wound up keeping it pretty much mint & mostly using the boreguide and the original cleaning rod with other brushes and patches.

For the next AIs, I pretty much just got the boreguide and then used the Dewey rods and other brushes / patches.

I usually try to clean it after every 20 to 50 rounds now that it is broken in and completely clean it before putting it away after a day of shooting

Re: A quick review on AI's cleaning kit for AE and AW

I clean my AW when my groups start to spread or if its going to hang on the wall for some time. I agree the bore guide is very loose but I think its should be fine. You could order a custom delrin to fit but haven't had a problem using mine. Just don't clean it very often and it wont matter.

Re: A quick review on AI's cleaning kit for AE and AW

With that style of jag, I usually cut patches in half (triangles) and pin closer to one point on the jag then wrap. Fairly tight but can get it through the bore.

Re: A quick review on AI's cleaning kit for AE and AW

I use a custom bore guide made by Sinclairs. It fits tightly, seals in the chamber, and works well. You can order it directly from Sinclair International. My 0.02.

The Parker Hale jags are to be wrapped around the Jag,

you take a corner and roll it tightly around the jag at a 30-40 degree angle

It should be really tight in the bore, there should be no need to cut it!

Re: A quick review on AI's cleaning kit for AE and AW

Somewhat on topic-

What's the consensus on bore snakes for precision rifles?

I use them on my 'fighting guns'(AR's, AK's and my Glocks), but was hesitant on my bolt gun. Some solvent and patches every couple hundred rounds seems to work fine.

Thoughts?

Re: A quick review on AI's cleaning kit for AE and AW

I know the guys at Rifles Only use one at the end of every shooting session. Therefore, I use one at the end of every shooting session! I clean every 500-1000 rounds, bore snake in between.

8/27/10 update:

I have used the cleaning kit again, and I have to say I have a higher opinion of it now. Using the jag with the supplied patches wrapped around it, I had no problems runnign patches through the barrel. The brush is very stiff and very tight, but probably does a really good job breaking up the carbon. It is very hard to get through the bore compared to any other brush I have used.

I felt the need to bump this up, because I believe it deserves a better score now than I initially gave it.
