    Hi everyone,

Although I use a rear bag, I have often wondered about buying a monopod as it seems there are times when it would have an advantage over a rear bag. Would like to hear from people that have some experience and can provide their opinion (good or bad) regarding:

    1. Usefulness - Is it worth the $150 as compared to a bag? What are the pros/cons?
    2. Installation on an AT...not much out there that I can find. It looks like the buttstock can accomodate but I haven't tried to see how
    Thanks in advance

I don’t remember if it was my AT or my DTA that was already tapped for a rear monopod. I’ve used the mono-pod on different rifles. I personally don’t care for them. They can be very precise for adjusting, but I don’t find a rear bag hard to manipulate for my uses. Bench shooting would likely be nice with a monopod.

    Thanks

I was thinking of using this from the bench or prone that is why I am interested. Most of my shooting is from those positions. For positional stuff, the bag would be used versus the monopod.

Thanks for the interest, the monopod is the most under rated and misunderstood piece of gear we make. It's interesting that a thread back in 2003 about the use of a monopod is what introduced me to Snipershide. A buddy sent me a link to a SH thread and said I should have a look.... So what I found was the OP asked a question simular to the OP in this thread. Several members commented with a general "no usefulness in the field good for bench only" type of comment. Then a highly regarded civilian instructor at the SOTIC schoolhouse named "Rick B." posted up in part- "I love the BT04 Accu-Shot as does the the rest of the instructors that have used them". All of this came as a complete surprise to me and I was flattered and humbled. Years later I was able to meet the two SF guys that brought the monopods to the schoolhouse at the first USASOC Sniper Competition. Small world.
We plan to start shooting a "Use and Application" video on the monopods soon, the advantage of being attached to the rifle is huge. Think of the monopod as the "steering wheel" to target acquisition, once aligned, hold what you got and work the trigger. Yes, the monopod can be contact to supporting surface, but better to use heel of hand as "soft" contact. You need/want to move, pick up rifle and go and you have a free hand to do as needed. The monopod wont get lost nor left behind. I can go on and on, but, I am biased. Here's more - http://www.accu-shot.com/how_to_best_size_accu-shot_precision_monopod.php

Regarding the AT, here is a link with pictures of the BT57 installed on a AT, it's pretty easy th skins have parting lines that we used as a guide so the fit and installation looks intended. - http://www.accu-shot.com/catalog_ne...accuracy-international-at-asaiat-monopod.html

Thanks for taking the time to answer Kasey.

I know there are parting lines on the but but am not sure how it comes apart. I forgot to try and figure it out when I removed them to install the new competition trigger but I don't recall that they are come apart. There is no instructions to be found anywhere. So the question I have is how do you install it? Is there a procedure?

BTW, thanks for the great products..I have a couple of ATLAS bipods including the 5H

You are welcome! Glad for the opportunity and Thank you for the patronage!!.

The skins have a "parting line" that is used as a cutting guide, (seen on tan stock on link above) I've taken a couple of pictures of mine after the fact... the small "corner" pieces are removed from both sides then the monopod fills in the void and is held in place with the lower buttpad bolt. The BT57 has two "ribs" on each side that engage two sides of the frame. It's a simple, straight forward installation and the results are solid.

You bet. Mine is an AT folder, and the Victor Company skins bolted right up.

    This is really strange.

Since I am left handed and they didn't have it listed on the buy page, I emailed them this note

    "Hi Nik,

We don’t sell skins for the AT, sorry!

Well that's kind of a pain in the ass... I went and looked up my old order and grabbed a screen cap, and also took a pic of the skins on my AT (note the hole for the Quickloc screw) showing that they do in fact fit. I'm not sure why VC doesn't list the AT as a compatible model.

No tellin'. Given all of this headache, the BT57 monopod that Kasey mentioned above may be a better solution.

You know...he may have thought I wanted the entire set of skins. I am only looking for the buttstock. I'm going to try him again

If you want to conserve ammo, get one. You’ll spend more time constantly dicking with the monopod adjustments than pulling the trigger.

Even on a flat bench pretty much any centerfire rifle is going to move around under recoil that some degree of adjustment will be required before the next shot. You also end up pulling against it side to side and interrupting your natural point of aim and making it work against you.

A good bag works much quicker and easier to adjust with a simple squeeze and used properly won’t work against you.

    Monopods are mall ninja kit.

I've always used bags. I would even call myself a bag whore as I have quite the collection. I know a couple of F-Class shooters that swear by the monopods. I have never tried one so have no opinion. The idea of cutting my AT's skins really does not appeal to me though so I will probably pass.
