I guess these AI AW actions are not available, save if you buy the whole rifle. But do you think the action alone would be perfect for a heavier/long range hunting rifle - mil-spec and just about jam proof and comes with safety that locks the firing pin ( unlike the US favourite Remington 700 and clones) so you can reasonably safely keep one round chambered. Sounds the perfect basis for a 308 hunting rifle to me.

Pleased to see the Apex in the special build does have a 3 position safety that blocks the firing pin. Just how do you Americans all allow yourselves to be sold rifles by Remington and Savage etc with safeties that just block the trigger?

Easy for Brit to say of course, cos we only have custom builders left - very sad.

Re: Accuracy International action

Safety is only there to make the lawyers happy. Don't trust any and rarely use. Best safety is keeping that finger off the trigger.

If you want an AI action you might look at the Badger M2008 action.

Re: Accuracy International action

AIAW are available as complete rifles only, not as a barreled action. The new Badger M2008 and the Winchester Model 70's have three position safeties and are preferred over the Remington 700 by some of us here in the former colonies.

Re: Accuracy International action

I wouldn't say the AW is a perfect hunting rifle. It is the heaviest .308 around, and quite over built for hunting IMO. If all you have is customs, use a remington clone action, there are so many nice ones out now.

Re: Accuracy International action

See that Voere of Austria are now offering a decocking button for the Remington 700 - claimed to be silent. Push to cock the rifle and then rely on the trigger safety. Should do the trick so I can keep one up the spout safely.

On the other hand, maybe I'll stick to the good old Mauser 98.

Funny that is what I hunt with exclusively either my awsm 338 or my awp .308. Yes they are heavy but that does not bother me. In my opinion they are the best rifles on the planet.

Re: Accuracy International action

NOT quite sure as to the main reasons you want to have a AW type hunting rifle .

For me the Main points of the action are :

1 ) Full dia 3 lug bolt .

2 ) Designed to run double feed double stack 10rd mags .

3 ) Long tunion ( barrel thread in ) length .

I feel when specing a hunting rifle , you want to NOT have IT as heavy as a Tactical rig .

Be aware that the Bagder M2008 is a heavy action , almost a pound heavier than a std Rem type action .

In liter actions that Still run a 10rd AW magazine ,

1 ) Apex VR-1 , rem type bolt
2 ) Phoenix/Defiance , rem type bolt
3 ) Avenger II , full body type bolt

I suggest you have a hard look at those and the M2008 , pick which one suites YOU .

While the 3- Posn safety is NICE , donot get Bent over IT , as some one already said , best safety is your finger , straight outside the guard .

Look at lite weight stocks like the McMillan Edge or Manners carbon fibre .

Later Chris

Not all AI rifles have a three-position safety, the AE does not. If you rely on mechanics to be safe, you're not safe.

Re: Accuracy International action

If the AIAW action came without the full length bedding block and you didn't fit the heavy barrel that comes as standard, then I still think it would be a good basis. But of course that won't happen and no, a 10 round magazine for hunting would be daft anyway. Here in the UK, the idea of blasting away rounds at a deer is anathema one shot kills are what we aim for and we wait for broadside on shots to be sure as we can of clean kills.

On the safety issue, I am not convinced at all. I like a safety that blocks the firing pin so accidental discharge say on dropping the rifle is impossible. Trigger blocking safeties just don't do it for me.

But, as we say, different strokes for different folks but I still would not want to hunt with someone who has one up the spout of their rifle and just a trigger safe.

Re: Accuracy International action
