I'm sorry ahead of time, I'm sure this has been covered but my "Google fu" spent the last hour trying to get a concrete answer.

We know that:
AX338MC can shoot: 338, 300, and 308
AX308MC can shoot: 308, 260, 6.5, 243 etc.

However, can I go from the AI AX338MC and shoot 260 remington or do I need the buy the short action version AX308MC?

My ideal setup is a one rifle chassis system that is capable of shooting 338, 308, and 260 Remington. I know the DTA can do this, but am not a fan of the bolt manipulation of a bullpup design and have always desired to own an AI.

Thanks!

if it shoots .308, then it should shoot the .308 case size family. just have to get a barrel spun up.

think DTA goes from 223-338 now on the SRS with the SAC 223 conversion

This is what I figured, I just didn't want to assume anything. I was pretty confident there would be a high enough demand for a third party to make barrels, I just haven't heard anything official that AI would be making 260 barrels for the AXMC long action platform.

Since 338 is a caliber I would only be shooting 30% of the time, I'm really contemplating just getting the AX308MC for the lightweight and shorter bolt throw, and then buying a cheaper dedicated 338 rifle (used TRG or used AW, 98B etc.).

If anyone has anything more to add I would appreciate it. Throwing around 15k on a couple rifle platforms isn't chump change, and I just don't want to get stuck waiting for conversion barrels (I.e. MRAD end users).

The long action version uses a larger tennon so unless AI makes 260 barrels for it you would have to have a gunsmith spin one up. I'm sure you could over one directly from Dave Tooley or GAP. If you want to run the 260 barrels AI currently stocks you would be limited to the short action rifle.

You have what is likely the most practical choice already figured out. Either a 308MC or AT would serve you well with a 308 and 260 barrel. Can always pick up a used AW or TRG later for 338 LM use.

That is sound advice. An AXMC 338 is going to run you $7500 and the 308 conversion + 260 barrel will probably run another $2500 or possibly more. For less money you can pick up an AT folder at a street price of $4083 shipped and then watch for a deal on a 338. An AX338 just sold here for $5100 shipped a few week a ago and came with a scope mount and atlas bipod. Assuming you find a deal like that you'd be into two rifles in three cals for less money.
