Re: Accurate 9mm loads?

You do know that most steel targets are adjustable and they can be made so that nothing less than a 44 mag will cause them to tip over. You need to concentrate on staying within safe ranges. Then if it doesn't knock it over you need to talk with a range officer.

Re: Accurate 9mm loads?

My oal I listed above is correct. I get right around 1100 fps out of my 226 with this load. I use this load for uspsa production and I have no trouble with the large steel poppers. I always try to hit them high anyway. Also, the poppers are supposed to be calibrated so a 9mm will knock them down.

Re: Accurate 9mm loads?

My match load in USPSA Production for several years (I shoot Single Stack now) using either the G34 or G17. Nosler 115 gr. JHP over 5.7 gr. of Alliant Power Pistol in (fill in the blank) brass. I prefer Federal brass. Win. Small pistol primer. OL 1.082 In the G17 the last batch I checked chronoed at 1141 fps, ES of 29, PF of 131. I researched and tested 9mm loads for years and this is the MOST accurate load in the G34/17 that I ever came across. From a Ransom Rest this load will shoot inside of 1.5" at 25 yards all day long. If you have trouble finding the Nosler bullet, use a Remington 115 JHP. The two will interchange as far as powder charge and seating depth. The Rem is not quite as accurate. DO NOT over crimp these, just enough that you don't get set back while chambering and normal cycling. "Slower" burning powders work best in 9mm for accuracy as opposed to the common fast powders like 231, Bullseye, etc... They also fill the case nicely. The above load is border line compressed, so use the common reloading practice of 10% less and working your way up.

Re: Accurate 9mm loads?

My experiments with making an accurate 45acp rifle led me to have; a Shilen bull barrel, a very tight chamber*, ammo resized again after loaded, 230 gr Montana Gold FMJ bullets, and very hot loads.
I can get 20 rounds rapid fire inside 4" at 100 yards.

Accuracy with 185 gr bullets is terrible. I don't know, but suspect, that there needs to be a lot of bearing surface on the bullet to keep the bullet center of gravity centered in the bore. Otherwise, the bullet tips, and centripetal force throws the bullet randomly off course upon exiting the bore.

*I cut the straight wall chamber within .001" of the size the brass comes out of the sizing die.
I throat the chamber to fit the bullet to be used.
