First off, I did some forum and web searching with no avail so I’m soliciting the hive mind...

Is there any good way to remove the binder plate from a 308 size 10 round accurate mag?

Thanks and happy 2019!

There are two spot welds on the front holding the plate in there. Drill them out just big enough that the plate comes loose. Take a piece of brass on the inside and plug weld from the outside. Clean up welds with a dremel or small die grinder and that's it. I have done several and have a buddy that needs another done. I will try to take pics on the next one so people can see how it's done. It's very simple to do.

I’m glad I asked before my primate brain took over and made me start whacking on things with a hammer and punch.

It's really easy as long as you have a welder or know someone who does. I wish I still had my tig welder for these projects but mig gets the job done. Only downside is there is usually a little porosity in the weld from having the brass on the backside.

Some people also leave holes in the magazine where they drilled out the binder plate spot welds, but that could lead to the magazine splitting if you were rough on it.

Some guys will just drill through the exterior of the mag and remove the two spot welds. Then fill in the holes with expoxy.

Another way is to use a dremel with carbide burr and just grind the welds out from the inside. Then you don’t have to worry about a hole going through your mag or welding anything back up.
