OH
Just got the phone call that my Armalite SASS rifle is on its way. I am having trouble deciding if I want to mount an ACOG or scope on it. I came across a good deal on a 6X ACOG awhile back and have been saving that to put on the AR10. Now I am not sure I want to go that route. I don't do much shooting beyond 600-700 m. Any pros/cons or insights would be greatly appreciated.

Re: ACOG or scope?

Id go variable power scope were I you and drop the acog on another AR, assuming you already have a nice precision job in the safe.

BUT it depends what you want to do. If you are trying to shoot groups at range, then I think you would be better served by the precision offered by the variable scope. Hunting or shooting small targets would also be easier and better suited to the variable glass.

If you are bangin steel, varmints, or something similar, I think you would be well served by the ACOG.

I shoot a 4x acog with the chevron off my ar15 rifle and it is great. I have not shot it past 500, but I dont see why I couldnt hit my ipsc steel beyond that. That said, it is really not my preference for group shooting etc. Otherwise, it has great eye relief, it is compact compared to a big variable, and the tritium/fibre optic lit reticle is great too.

For me a big decider would be how good of a deal you are getting on that ACOG or if I had another scope laying around. Soooo, both would work for ya IMHO.

Re: ACOG or scope?

I hunted last weekend with my acog 3.5 power for the first time-I loved it for blind and feeder hunting. I put on an ar 308 with a 16" barrel. When shooting for groups at the range, a bit more power would be nice, but its a nice challenge. It really helps to cover the scope to keep reticle bloom down while shooting at the range.

Re: ACOG or scope?

I found the 6x ACOG for a good price. Not really looking to shoot tight groups. More hunting, varmits, and general target. I also have a 10x42 SuperSniper with Badger rings laying around that I could use if I wanted to go that route. I think I will wait till I get the rifle, which should be this weekend and try the ACOG and see what I like.

Re: ACOG or scope?

I like a variable power for those ranges from 1 - 600M. I used the ACOG 4x while in the military and the fixed power was good in certain situations, but less than optimal in others. I have a leupold 1.5x5 that works, but I am looking into getting one of the new 1x8's, the March 1x10, or the 2.5x10 NF.
Shooting an IPSC at 600 or 700 with the 5 power on the leupold is alright, but at those ranges I would like a little more power to really see the target clearly.

Re: ACOG or scope?

The 3.5x ACOG is a great setup on a . 308 AR. It has good eye relief compared to the 4x model . I don't know much about the 6x ACOG, but im sure its a awesome optic.
