Can someone give a unbaised review of the pro's and con's and compare these actions: SURGON, TEMPLAR (GAP), and a blueprinted worked over Remington 700 action? IF someone would like to add another fee free but these 3 in particular spark interest.

Re: Action Comparison

The trued Remington is only cheaper if you already have a Remington action or you find one really cheap then have it blue printed (not totally true, it is cheaper but marginal cost). The custom actions use better quality steel which will theoretically allow you to hang a heavier barrel without issue, most have a tighter bolt to raceway fit, and are generally pretty true to begin with. Me personnally, unless i was building a bench gun off a BAT action i would go with a blue printed Remington because i do my own work and i get that warm fuzzy feeling cutting everything true and concentric (OCD). I like side bolt releases, integral rails and recoil lugs, but i would at least check the custom action and true it if necessary before barreling it (not all are straight just because they're "custom"). Although i haven't barreled any, Stiller seems to have a good reputation also for being straight and similarly priced to Surgeon and Defiance (i think Defiance makes the Templar action for GAP).

If integral rails and recoil lugs is important to you go custom, if not Remington is just as good. They all shoot awesome from my experience. A good barrel and chamber job seems to be more important than the action.

Re: Action Comparison

well stated if you own the remington you can get away with a bit less incorperated into a build but then if you sold the rem action you would likley end up with the same cost of the finished rifle but the biggest thing is the resale value a trued remington will not have the resale value of a custom rifle so unless you can do the work to the action yourself you would be better using a custom action. also look at Lawton as their actions ave very good value for money the choice is yours though if you have a donor rem but not the ability to do the work i would sell the rifle and put the money into a custom action.

But in the end any action can be made to shoot well and any action can be made to shoot like crap with a badly fitted or poor quality barre.

i have found that a factory remington with just the action face squared and a ground recoil lug can make all the diference and if keeping the rem action i would just do that if paying someone as it will keep machining costs to a minimum and will shoot very well the bigist problems we find is with the faces of rem actions.
