Gentlemen, I'd like to purchase a 5R rifle but would like your expert advice, should I go with a Remington or a Savage?

Thanks,
gcp

Re: adviceOn 5R

I see its your 1st post, welcome to the Hide!

The Remington 5R is a fine rifle, hard to beat its out of the box accuracy for the money. Savage, also a fine rifle, although the Remington is better suited for upgrades down the road if rifle purpose and skill demands.

Best answer; there is no clear winner, pick what suits your needs and budget, they will both be a terrific platform to shoot and learn on.

Re: adviceOn 5R

More aftermarket parts are available for the rem. So when you shoot the barrel out of it I think it would be more easily customized. 5Rs are a good rifle and you should be happy with it...depending on your requirement for accuracy. I've heard some are finicky to handload for... as was mine. Note I am NOT saying they all are but occasionally I have read of some offering difficulties. I am on my second one. I killed my first 5R after 1300 rounds. Remington replaced it and within a week I had another brand new barreled action. This one is a solid sub .6moa rifle with plenty groups in the .3s and .4s at 100y...5 shot groups. 800 rounds later still going strong. It hated full length sized brass and only wants neck sized FC or virgin win brass. I hope this one makes it past 1300.

Members, thank for your replies and the welcome!

I have found some more info around here I am currently going through, indeed this has proven a difficult evaluation for me as both are very fine rifles but I like the looks of the H&S stock with the SS barrel of the Remington but also like the removable magazine of the Savage. I own a number of rifles (PH in 7mag & Swiss K31s) with removable magazines and very much like this feature.

Re: adviceOn 5R

Both rifles are very good. I own a Remy 5R. Sub .5MOA with the right driver. Advantage to the Remy is the aftermarket parts and the fact that there are more gunsmith's who work on them. Mine has had a trigger job and a custom muzzle brake installed. Next step is to install a Accuracy International stock, which will solve the removable mag issue.

Re: adviceOn 5R

Remington has the aftermarket parts. Some of the upgrades you can do yourself with the right help. The action on a Remington is worth 400 dollars by itself. Later if you decide to build a custom. The action will be more suited for the build than a Savage. This is my 2 cents.

Re: adviceOn 5R

I purchased my 5R back in Jan and love it. Ive had a few Remi 700s and love the action. Gun will shoot sub-moa all day. Debating whether i want to change the stock next or just do a mag conversion. Good luck on your purchase.

Re: adviceOn 5R

The Savage is going to be cheaper in the long run. The barrel is easily changed by you, and there are plenty of after market items out there. A big plus is if you want a DBM you can buy a factory savage without spending another 250 or 300. I have the Savage 10PC with the 5R barrel it loves 155 amaxs and 175 SMK. I happen to like the accustock so I have left it alone and it came with the target accutrigger. I have never been a big fan of the accutrigger but this one I happen to like but I may change it out with a SAV-2 from Rifle Basix. So far it has consistently been a half moa rifle at 100 but i haven't been able to shoot at any thing longer. It was aliitle easier to build loads for than my other 308 with a shilen barrel. I can't comment on Remington as the only 2 i have are 788's but all i hear is good things.

Re: adviceOn 5R

What's the best place to order a 5R in 308? I've been monitoring gunbrocker, does anyone know/have dealt with Sportsman’s Finest in Austin, Texas?

Any suggestions will be appreciated.

I also have an option to buy a Rem 700 in 300 ultra mag with a 26 inch SS fluted barell and H&S stock, no 5R though for $750. I am worried it's too much rifle for paper plinking but it sure is one beautiful looking piece of HW.

Re: adviceOn 5R

Are there any reseller members around here that sell the 5R new in 308? Would prefer to buy from a fellow member to support the bretheren so to speak.

The 300RUM is a beast, unless it has a brake the recoil is rough imo. To shoot paper, .223 will do. A Remy in .308 would be my choice.

Re: adviceOn 5R

Guys, thanks for your input! I ordered from Scott a 5R in 308 today and expect it to be in my hands by this weekend. In the mean time I’d like to purchase a scope base and rings for my 3x9 SWFA SS. What would you recommend that would be reasonably priced?

Also, I plan to reload so I’ll need to order 308 caliber stuff from Midway, or elsewhere if more appropriate, bullets and brass. I already have quite a bit of powder (WC, Varget, RL, and XMR) so any recipes you’ve found successful please feel free to share so I can make the accuracy quest a bit shorter.

Do you recommend breaking-in the barrel and if so what’s the most appropriate method?
