Ok, so I've been looking at a short .223 bolt gun. I was looking at GB and found some NIB 700 actions for sub-$300. That got me to thinking about the possibility of building one up. Anyway, what are some of the more, how shall I say, "affordable" barrel makers? How does a Remage fitment work?

You screw the new barrel into the action until it stops on the go gauge thats inserted into the chamber so that you know it is screwed in the perfect amount. Tightening the barrel nut, which is a jam nut torquing on the barrel threads essentially, holds it in that correct location and positioning.

Its super easy, especially once youve done it and realize thats all there is to it lol.

I too go to NSS for all my remage barrel and tool needs as hes been nothing sort of great and with very competitive prices every day.
But lots of places make remage stuff, basically anyone can.

  • Barrel
  • Barrel Nut
  • Recoil Lug
  • Action Wrench
  • Barrel Nut Wrench
  • Recoil Lug Alignment
  • Barrel Vice
  • Go Gauge
  • Scotch Tape

I believe the"new Jim" actually goes by James, but yes call him and get a Criterion barrel, GO gauge, wrench, lug & nut.

One thing to keep in mind he does not often stock barrels on the shorter side (less than 26" or 24"). He can order whatever you want, but it's a 10-16 week lead time currently. I recently did a .308Win Remage and the shortest barrel he had in stock was a 26". I wanted a 22" and did not want to wait, so I bought the 26" and had a local gunsmith cut & thread it.

Question, not wanting to take away form OPs thread but I have also been looking into a Remage barrel for a Rem 700 I have. Curious if a stock or chassis has to be modified to run the new barrel nut?

These guys offer affordable Stainless Remage options using Wilson blanks. (unaffiliated, just a contented customer)

I've had good results with a few of their .224 blanks chambering my own barrels. I've got a few .5 MOA blanks that get the job done. I shot this last weekend with one of their 1:8 Wilsons just trying to run up the pressure on a new load:

Yes, some stocks need to be modified to fit the barrel nut. Greyboe is good to go.

Most chassis seem to be straight cut and will accept anything. Verify though.

Yeah, I came across them too. I was skeptical with their prices being as good as they are...

We have 7tw 22cal Rock Creeks in stock and we contour to order. Current lead time on a 223 is 3-4 weeks
Barrel price includes a barrel nut for easy install and I have a recoil lug in stock that will drop in place and our barrel nut fits inside a Bravo chassis without issue.

Alternately we can chamber a barrel specifically to your supplied 700 action, supplying the blank/lug/work and a basic truing operation on the receiver for $900 with a 3-4 week lead as well. And the returned barreled action comes with a dimensional tag giving you the necessary information for us to make you shouldered prefits in the future.

The barrel, nut, lug, action wrench, barrel nut wrench, and cerakote cost me about $600. It took about 10 days but I’m sure the cerakoting slowed it down a couple of days.
The hardest part was removing the factory barrel. Like many others here I highly recommend northland. Awesome people to do business with.

There’s a damn good deal on ER Shaw remage barrels from a guy here on the Hide. He had multiple barrels in several different chambering available but I’m not sure if he still has any 223s left. He only wanted like $250 dollars for one and they are NEW. That’s probably as inexpensive as you’ll see. Just saying
