Early in our history much of the gold found was from my area, Gold Hill, near Arvonia, Virginia. Production then moved to the area of Dalonega Georgia til the Civil War. After the discovery at Sutter's Creek it all went to California, then Alaska. My grandfather on my mother's side did the trip to California, and returned to Virginia with quite a grubstake, Im told.

I never panned for gold but did look for emeralds in Hiddenite, North Carolina. You can dig for them today.

I'm just pullin' yer leg......Around here (Seattle), legend has it the ONLY people to get rich off the Alaska/Klondike Gold Rush were the outfitters. The vast majority of "miners" lost everything. Most of them were rookies with no experience. The majority of them passed through Seattle on their way north (and south, if they were lucky.....).

Although, if a guy didn't get over extended and was careful, I suppose he could make some good dough, like you're talking about.

From what Ive read, one who is willing to put in a LOT of hard work can make $200-300 a day with some equipment...high pressure hoses, sluice box, etc. Sounds like a lot of work. Raising cannabis might be a better investment.

Yep be the one selling shovels, food, salt and gear to the miners in the gold rush... come out on top no matter what happens to them.
We did the same thing during the Cryptomining rush... didn't do any mining but were selling all the video cards we could get our hands on. Then managed to get most of our stock sold right before it crashed.

Some of the coastal area rivers are predicted to peak at record levels of over 30 feet above flood stage. I don't know how rapid the flow gets down there, but it's an idea worth looking into.
There might also be some good metal detection work on the beaches as this storm as washed back layers and moved stuff around after a fairly calm summer.

My Lady and I each tried our hand at a pan in Skagway Alaska, last week. She got $8 and change, and I got $10 and change. Out of a single 'demo' pan. It was fun, and a heck of an experience for her.

Oh, I know it was 'planted'. Technically, 'salted' is the proper term. When I used to live out West, many years ago, I had a claim which I used to work/maintain. Yes, it produced gold. But My Lady (who'd never left the prairies, previously) had never had a pan in her hands, and seriously, how is panning ANYTHING that can be described. Only way to know, is to put one in her hands and go-for-it!

Considering the tour package and landed opportunities, I/we jumped at that chance. Next, she'd like to go back, but on our OWN schedule next time. And yes, she'd like to pursue the 'prospecting' thing with me, too.

It's one thing to 'need to get rich quick' whereas it's a whole other thing to 'just want to try her hand at it and see what happens.' Not unlike the blackjack tables, this is NOT retirement plan. Educational, historical learning, physics and geography all mixed into the experience. Not to mention the rustic "living in the bush" point of it all, too.
