Corona Free! Shooting in a Free State - sort of. Understand we have to wear masks.

Reach for 1000 Class at Sig.

    5162020.jpg

Going to shoot an old school .308 with SFP scope and capped turrets. Hoping to go to 1000 shooting a simple 5 mil reticle.

Age of corona virus....reports direct to classroom.

    516201.jpg

Im early because there is no better time than morning.

Looks like Sig is building out there "O" course and incorporating some physicality into their classes. May have to try one of those....

    51620202.jpg

Think there is another Hider attending this class.

Lunch break. We made it out to 750 before stopping.

100 Yard initial zero using a 2 mil hold under....

    516203.jpg

Those were shot at 9X full magnification.

Im using a M40 clone but cheating with a Leupold that has a mil dot reticle....

    516204.jpg

    Down range....

    516205.jpg

    My end 100 yard zero.

    516206.jpg

I can get 7 mils of reticle hold at 9X. 750 yards per Kestrel and actual shooting was 7.03 mils of hold.

I sat my torso steel about center of where the thin cross hair meets the duplex portion of the reticle. I was hitting the big gong - probably 3x3 or 4x4 no problem. On the torso I made my hits approaching 50%, maybe a hair more. Guess I should have counted but your listening, looking, just prepping for the next shot not keeping score.

1000 after lunch. Ill have to mag down to 4.5X. Going to be a challenge. The metal butt plate M40 packs a punch too once you get beyond 40 rounds. Collar bone will have some new colors tonight

    1000 Yards

    Data from the Kestrel...

    My pre arrival estimates....

    5162010.jpg

    Down Range....

    516208.jpg

The scope view at 4.5X...Camera focus sucked

    5162011.jpg

    My doubling reference mark...

    5162012.jpg

Banging the 4x4 Gong was pretty easy. The Kestrel/ConX linkup gave pretty good info

I made hits on the torso, hit a sub MOA balloon. Most of the shots would cause you to ruin your shorts more than send you to the hospital but big respect for guys that carried these in combat. Its a good rifle for what they had to do and I had the crutch of having a mil reticle.

107 rounds of 175 FGMM....my shoulder is sore. I was getting the yips at the end of it.

Great AAR from a trip you’ll surely remember for a long time! Not to mention for the next week while the shoulder recovers. Great shots of a day well spent.

Looks like a good time. (y)

Maybe you should have taken some Midol at lunch break for the shoulder?

Good to hear the 1/2 power doubler worked. Nice after action report.
Would you do it again? The 9 power sfp?

I learned a lot today that would likely improve hit probability next time.

At 750 and 1000 The top of the duplex was my hold. It covered alot of the target.

If I wanted to really succeed Id be better zeroing at 5 mils under and keeping 9X as long as I can or learning the magnification points that put the center cross on target at certain ranges - like a BDC reticle of sorts.

Im going to return my zero back to the center croos but its good to know that if needed I can drop mag down and get 10 mils out of my reticle.

I dont think I look forward to taking that pounding again from the light gun with the metal butt plate. I learned about mass, equal and opposite reactions, metal beats flesh....that sort of shit.

I do have a pre 64 Model 70 with external mount Unertl that would be fun to try. 30-06, metal butt plate, straight fine cross hairs. I think I checked the numbers and there is just enough adjustment with my scope blocks to get me there.

Forgot to post a picture of this guy....

    516209.jpg

This shooter came up for a full week PSR 101, PSR 102, PSR 103

He bought the .308 Varmint R700 BDL, prepping for the class. It was the only thing available in the Covid 19 world.

He bought a Sig Scope at the Academy. The first one failed the day before his PSR103 class. That scope was fresh mounted yesterday morning and zeroed.

He was shooting 168 grain FGMM.

He was crushing steel at 1000 and popping balloons.

So to all that say R700s cant do it, your primary extraction wont allow you to extract spent brass, the plastic stock will flex, their barrels are shit, 168 SMKs drop from the heavans at 800 yards..........I saw none of that to be true yesterday.

Sure there may be better but you can get it done on budget gear.

Excellent AAR. Appreciate the write-up, and I wondered how your class went. Great job.

This technique is what I was attempting describe when I suggested mapping the reticle. I didn't explain it very well, but it is an option.
Our newer gear sure does make it a bunch easier.
Congratulations on your fun day, and on employing the old school gear. Great success!

I understood your most excellent solution, you were clear.

Ill be going back to a standard zero. That will give me 10 mils and this will be a 900 and in gun. I rarely get to shoot long distance anyway.

Tried to get pics of my bruised shoulder today but it probably would have turned out gay porn like and my PM box would have started filling up.

I dont generally consider myself a pussy but at 107 rounds my ability to handle the thumping really degraded the quality of my shooting. Guess Ill have to reassess my opinion of myself.

Shit Ive fired a full spam can of 30-06 through a steel plated 03 and not been as beat up. 30-06 seems less recoil pressure impulse than .308 at times I guess. An 03 thumps but not like that lightweight M40.

There sure was, it was me! Was there for the whole week PSR 101, 102, 103 for a fundamentals refrresh. I was trying to stay off my phone so i didn't see this thread but I thought I remembered another thread where you mentioned you were coming.

I was the fat guy with the AI set up on the other side of that pelican case since I didn't want my muzzle brake throwing sand at everyone....

    You shot well.

Didnt want to stand up in class and ask "Who here is from Snipers Hide?"

Kid you were partnered with shooting the budget Remington is on a good track.

He spent more on training than gear.

Now that I have my coupon code Ive got to look for a new class.

Taking advanced carbine in October already. Thinking to sign for a pistol class or two.

@Blackjack988 if you havent taken the PSR Skill Builder I highly recommend it. Its more about shooting drills and they introduce a little stress on the shooter. We only went out to 750 the day I took it and if I remember right round count was less than 100 but it was quality shooting. Its also cheaper than reach for 1000.

Going forward Ill probably only do Skill Builders on PSR. Unkown Distance does seem to be a good one. Would like to use the range estimation feature in the Kestrel in that class to see how it works out. Should probably take Coaching and Wind Calling but I absolutely suck at coaching and picking up impact down range - whih of course indicates I should take the class.
