I have a old AI AW in 7.62 and want to convert it to 6mm or 6.5mm Creedmoor. Looking at the Proof Research Carbon Fiber barrels. What special tools do I need besides a AI action wrench and how do you clamp a Carbon Fiber barrel without damaging it?

Thanks

I use a Brownell`s vise and use the appropriate bushings for whichever size Proof barrel you get. I clamp as close to the breech side as I can without hindering the recoil lug holder or action wrench if I can`t use one that goes in the bolt raceway. I have never had a problem with Proof, Christensen Arms or Carbon six barrels. I use aluminum bushings and when I`m finished I wipe the barrel off with a rag and Rem oil to remove any aluminum residue that may be on the SS and Carbon fiber. I was scared to death on y first one but haven`t thought about it since. I used to use a vise with leather on the inside thinking it would work better but don`t waste your money on that as it will slip and the leather residue is a lot harder to get off than the aluminum.

Dave, with an AW how can you clamp on the steel section over the chamber? You wouldn't be able to spin the action onto the barrel because its also bonded to the chassis? I have an AW and spoke to Proof about this- they told me to clamp the barrel on the exposed steel end of the barrel, not to clamp it on the carbon fiber, and limit the torque to 50 ft-lbs, which is what is engraved on the end of my Proof AI prefit barrels.

Yes the steel is best and the chamber (breech) is what I was referring to. If you ever do a Christensen Arms prefit, they only have about 3/8 of an inch so you have no choice as to clamp on carbon fiber with a little bit of steel. That`s why I said you can wipe any residue off.
