Any suggestions for an AK-47 for less than $1000, preferably about $800? I want a wood model. Do any come threaded 5/8x24? I'm not in any rush (I'm actually in time-out due to a recent gun purchase...). Suggests on what not to get would be greatly appreciated too. Thanks.

I don't have any AK experience, but have been thinking about getting one for the heck of it. After a bit of research, I narrowed it down to the Fime Molot Vepr series and the Arsenal SAM7 and SLR-107 series. The Arsenal's are a little more than the Veprs, but are close to your price range. Hopefully someone with some AK experience will chime in.

Century arms and Red Army make good ones. The RAS47. I picked mine up for $809 and thats with synthetic stock and Magpul furniture. The wooded ones are much cheaper. Not aware of any that come threaded 5/8-24. Most come with a left hand thread 14x1 barrel but you can get an adapter. I got an adapter for 5/8-24 so I could run my can.

I have two century arms ras47's and they both are good for the price...shoot well, never hand any malfunctions, I think I paid around $700 with Magpul furniture, but not positive. I got them when they first came out, my both have the left hand thread on them.

I may change directions a bit. Arsenal makes a short gassed 16" with side folder. It appears to be ripe for a sbr. It's my understanding from a little reading the gas port would need to be opened up to cycle with a short barrel. It's a little more than I was thinking, but the extra might make this fill a gap instead of a want. If i sbr'd I could have it threaded to 5/8x24 when cut, so I could suppress w/o having to get a new one.

Atlantic has a couple of side folders (sexy redheads!) with what they call welded faux suppressors that can be removed. I don't know if they're silver soldered or a couple of spot welds or what, bet sounds like a simple conversion.

Anyone gone one this route? Thanks.

I would invest in the Arsenal or Molot. Molot is filing for bankruptcy and I'm sure their line will continue but who knows. You'll have to rethread the barrel or run an adapter to get it down to the American 5/8x25 tp. You can always swap out furniture if you want the "red stained combloc" look.

if you can find an arsenal 107-11, that will be right in your price range at around $850. It does not have a folding stock, or threaded barrel, but it's $300 cheaper than the 107 fr that has both. Vepr Fime is also a great buy, and has an RPK receiver, so it's a bit heavier. Stamped Mak 90s can be found in original form between $800-$900. They are chinese, but quality rifles, and very sought after. They have awesome triggers, and are a bit thicker than other stamped rifles.
Also, if you want a working ak, don't underestimate the Romoniam wasr. They aren't pretty, no frills, but they run ($650).

oh, and whatever you do, don't buy a dam century rifle. Those are the biggest pos in the world. They focus their efforts on marketing "made in USA", and skimp on quality (cast trunion, soft metals parts).

The ur series are easy to sbr. Chop off the barrel with a saw, file and Sand it, and use a brass screw on a drill/dremel with valve compound to crown it

i used to own a milled arsenal and i kick myself for selling it... i killed more deer with that rifle than with any other rifle in my collection... anyway,... IMO, when it comes to AK's, i personally would only get an arsenal... big fan... don't expect 1" groups at 100yards.. maybe 1.5moa ish... maybe pushing 2moa.... but you know when you pull the trigger it will go boom.... no personal experience with the stamped models, but if i was to get another arsenal i would prob get another milled arsenal AK.. can see them on gun broker for about $1k if you look hard enough

Yup, pretty much sums up my thoughts. I do think Century C39s have closed the gap a bit but I still think Arsenal takes the cake. Love my Arsenal SGL21, fun to plink with, great brush gun for deer and pigs
