I WANT AN AK 47, BUT KNOW NOTHING ABOUT THEM. DO NOT WANT A RIFLE THAT HAS BEEN SHOT MUCH, WOULD RATHER NEW. WHAT SHOULD I TRY TO GET, I HEARD THE RUSSIAN & HUNGARIAN ARE PRETTY GOOD. ANY HELP APPRECIATED.

I HAVE RUSSIAN SKS WITH BAYONET AND CHINESE SKS WITH FIBERGLASS STOCK I WOULD LIKE TO USE AS A TRADE, WOULD THIS WORK?

Re: AK 47

sorry to get off topic but why would you want to buy an expensive AK when you probbley have a good SKS??? its my understanding that the AK is a few FPS slower than the SKS but they shoot the same round. maybe its just me but seems like a waste of $$$$$$... but i guess you can tell all your friends you have an AK... but you never know i might be completely wrong... Maybe were comparing apples to oranges here...

Re: AK 47

I have a Arsenal SLR 95.Pistol grip not the thumbhole. Also a Armory USA SSR-85C.The Arsenal is a milled gun and the Armory is stamped. Both have excellent triggers. Some AK'S are pretty sloppy with terrible triggers.Try to play with some before you buy.

Re: AK 47

lol me personally i have the ak's just for magazines. the sks mags are a pain. i owned a sks and they are solid but i would much prefer a ak just due to the availability of the mags. both are solid guns. good luck w/ getting a ak go for a under folder or side folder imo something w/a tapco trigger group in it. they are awesome shooters

Re: AK 47

Grunt Soldier said what I was thinking.... They both are good weapons....I have noticed quite a few hunters that use the SKS as inexpensive hunting weapons....They work just fine, just use a soft point 7.62X39 or a comparable hunting round and you are good to go. For changing mags or shooting more than 30 rounds at a time the AK wins that match hands down...Even with the mags converted for the SKS, I have seen lackluster performance and downright pain in the ass in changing mags. If I wanted a self defence / protect my family 7.62 X 39 rifle it would be the AK hands down. If I wanted more of a hunting 7.62 x 39, I would consider the SKS with a nice Eotech / Aimpoint or whatever floats my boat at the time..SmokeRolls

Re: AK 47

The most expensive and the most sought after AK's are the Russian AK's. They are hard to come by and can be quite costly. The milled AK's are very sweet ....And costly.... You have a few options.....Cost is the main factor.... How much money do you want to spend... Yes the Romanian and Bulgarian are more available and cheeper but you can get alot better versions for more $$$$.......There are some modernized American versions with picatinny rails built in that are sweet....They will cost you more but the end result is a sweeter weapon.... I have an Egyptian Maadi pre-ban side folder that performs very nice and i like it very well....I put bullets in, aim at the target, pull the trigger.....Works every time..... I've added a stock kit, a cheap / cheesy laser with a pressure switch ( I think I paid $25.00...laugh ! ) and a surefire x-200.( I know, I should have used a mini-mag light...It's all I had.)..SmokeRolls

Re: AK 47

I wanted an AK for awhile.

I broke down and bought a WASR on impulse in the gunshop. It was ugly but it was an AK and I got to hand pick it out of a couple. I managed to get one with a straight gas block and FSB and very little mag wobble. It was still ugly but refinishing the wood with some tung oil took care of that. Now I have a cheap AK that is 100% reliable and now serves as my "truck gun".

Would I pay the prices they are asking for Russian AK's? Nope. I don't see a need. But then again I am not an AK purist. I wanted a cheap, reliable combat rifle.

Re: AK 47

They make hi-caps for the sks,but are a pain in arss to use in a timely manner. Stay on your path to get the AK if the large amount of ammo is need for the show. How much you spend depends on you. The AK is a good weapon for close work, hard conditions, and just don't care what ammo. Good hunting.

Re: AK 47

look around i saw one at my local shop today. it was the paratrooper version w/ the side folding stock and tapco trigger group. the trigger pull was amazing and the gun felt good. the front sight was straight and there wasn't alot of mag wobble. he wanted 650 out the door for it. i would say something like that would suit you fine. you don't need to go all out its a ak. it will work no matter what and shoot pretty damn straight.

Re: AK 47

here's a picture of a couple of mine. the one is a polytec and next to a russian i say they are the best made its the one at the very end. the one next to w/ the drum i gave 700 for 2 weeks ago. and it shoots like a dream and feeds anything you put down it

+1 ..The SKS paratrooper version(very short) I have is absolutely excellent for hunting, especially in maine when its cold and you have a thick jacket for sitting in a stand or whatever.

The stock is a short pull like a junior rifle and it works great with a thick jacket

.
Normally a thick jacket can kind of be in the way IMO(but I'm no great hunter or anything).
Itsnice having a short pull and mild recoiling rifle that pulls up quick.
I handload softpoints for it and its just an amazing rifle IMO.
Its VERY under appreciated.
After owning my sks,,I wouldn't trade it for an AK for the purpose I use it for.
If you want a RAMBO style assault rifle for the cool factor than an AK is the one

.
For home defense I 100% agree I would pick the AK with some good military mags.
AK's are very nice but not needed for me.The mag issue is something to consider im sure but I have no issues with my aftermarket 5 rounder.

Re: AK 47

I think most people with an AK would be hard-pressed to trade it for an SKS IMO. The flexibility of the magazines makes it alot nicer for me, even though the SKS fits me better. There are still some 'decent' deals out there. Classicarms.us has some WASRs ($479) and some YUGO M70 underfolders ($699). I have both and though I love the WASR, the Yugo is wayyy nicer. Heavier receiver and barrel, and the action is super smooth; as compared to the WASR- which I will never sell

Hope this helps, and good luck!
