(And before you laugh, yes, someone actually makes a flat-pack DIY coffin kit: https://www.northwoodscasket.com/casket-kit-assembly-instructions/)

Lemme guess, you Googled "some assembly required"?
As Bob Eucker would say, "Juuuussst a little bit"

FWIW, IKEA is a testament to how much we let money get away from us here in the U.S. Ingvar was able to take products from modern countries at modern prices and be able to sell his stuff here for very inexpensive. Just shows how badly we let inflation rule us that those products, while not being premium, but rather utilitarian, can come here and be sold at the prices they do.

^^^ But they're Swedish Design! That gets a premium if you are a Fancy-pants urban hipster.

Motorcycling through Sweden and Denmark a few years ago... the signs every for stores selling "Design" were hilarious. Especially in the cruise ports. "This way for 'Design' dumb Americans." Come buy 'Design'. You didn't even know what the 'design' was.... but it was Swedish. Had to be good!

Cheers,

Sirhr

While I can appreciate a product or two from there, I will absolutely say that we've an affinity here for solid Oak, Mahogany, Maple, Walnut, Alder, Teak, Hickory, and even Cedar.

Hand carving is a definite touch. But proper fitment utilizing finger-jointing, dove-tailing, mortise and tenon, dado's and rabbets are the beginning of quality.

And then there's the finishing, which is a whole 'nuther story.

So, Jimmy, you're an oak man, too?

Best made furniture I've ever seen was made by Torring of Denmark. Solid teak, dovetail joinery, and that clean modern Scandinavian design. Proof that quality woodwork doesn't need to look ole timey.

The complete opposite of the Ikea particle board and plastic hardware shit

I bought our bedroom set in 1990 (when I was in my early 20s) and fully expect to die in it.
