Has anyone done an Altitude Speed of Sound Chart?

To make a long story short, I live at approximately 4000 ft.
above sea level. I found a balistics chart and ran some numbers
for the 40 grain .22LR at 1085 fps... (Not sure I did everything
right with the chart), anyway, the results say that Speed of sound
where I live is 1117 fps.

Anyone know if this would be correct? I understand speed of sound
will vary with altitude...

Re: Altitude Speed Of Sound Chart?

Thanks Thomas, I'll do some reading up on these charts.

I wasn't sure if the 1117 fps at my 4000' elevation was in the ball park or not? It does open the door for testing of the Federal 711B (1080 fps), and the Eley Sport (1085 fps), with an outside shot at Winchester T22 (1150 fps) to see the effect of how Standard Velocity will perform agains Subsonic Velocities. I also think it would be a good idea to get my hands on some Wolf MT (1050 fps) for my testing.

Speed of sound chart

The speed of sound in air is only dependent on the air's temperature.

altitude/elevation, Barometric pressure or air pressure has no effect.

Humidity has a slight effect on the speed of sound in air.
The speed of sound is slightly faster in more humid air.

Re: Altitude Speed Of Sound Chart?

My thoughts are about what effect this info will have on your shooting.

Rather than cogitating and calculating, just go out and shoot the danged thing. It will do whatever it's going to do whether one has a firm grasp on the local Mach velocity or not.

I've got this chart saved for future reference, Shiraz. You can never be armed with enough information. Thanks!

Depends on where you are shooting (within ear-shot of grumpy neighbors, etc).

If you are trying to avoid the sonic crack it is a huge deal.

KS;

If that's what this question is about, then I gladly defer to your wisdom. I agre, it would be a significant issue.

Re: Altitude Speed Of Sound Chart?

If speed of sound is affected only by air, the yes altitude does come into play. In different altitudes the air has different densities and properties.

Good job, you brought a 3 year old thread back from the dead!

Sorry, I didn't mean anything was wrong with you bringing an old thread back up to the top. This one is actually worth the discussion.
